You're likely thinking medical definition. I know there are some disputes over what constitutes a dead body, but I'd say brain death is the scientifically valid claim to the title since a heart can be replaced and restarted while a brain undergoing necrosis or apoptosis means lights out permanently. Afterall, this was the subject of Terri Schiavo who still had a beating heart and working body but over 90% of her brain mass was gone. The doctors said she was dead.
