No, I'm saying that there's no reason cigarette tax should just go to smoker healthcare.Shrykull wrote:
So, are you saying we shouldn't even pay for smoker's healthcare? I'm inclined to agree, except my mother smokes, and also it's illegal to turn away anyone who comes to the hospital emergency room, at least in the US.

Re: Cigarette tax 156% increase
Am I the only one vaguely perturbed by the idea of relying on a person's chemical addictions as a way to get revenue? I've never thought cig taxes were deterrents so much as a way to make easy cash.
Mind you, I have little sympathy for addicts of any stripe, but there's still something about it that seems a bit sinister.

Seriously, are we not all "dependent" on gasoline yet the governnent still taxes that. Hell, they tax income and sales as well, even though they are absolutely necessary for personal survival and the economy.

Only if countries are actually trying to encourage people to smoke. In the UK for example, doctors will earn bonuses if they can get people to quit.Tanasinn wrote:Am I the only one vaguely perturbed by the idea of relying on a person's chemical addictions as a way to get revenue? I think that should be read as "Aren't we all dependent on gasoline, and yet the government..." or "We are all dependent on gas, and the government still..."SCRawl wrote:We're not dependent on gasoline? What Darth Servo wrote is grammatically correct, but needs to be read slowly!

Yeah, that's totally my fault. I read it too quickly, and had to chime in with my $0.02.Dave wrote:I think that should be read as "Aren't we all dependent on gasoline, and yet the government..." or "We are all dependent on gas, and the government still..."SCRawl wrote:We're not dependent on gasoline? There should have been a '?' after gasoline in my post.
