America is also much more mobile, and job opportunities are spread far and wide.
What few Finnish girls I've seen are hot, so there's a point in favor, but I have to agree that the weather would be a distinct turnoff. I hate the cold.
But the introverted and minding-one's-own-business aspects (and the lack of a need to fill every moment with inane chatter) sounds almost like Paradise. I could do with a few less pushy, well-meaning but intrusive do-gooders.
What the hell; push comes to shove I like the Mediterranean area.
Is Finland a better place to live in than the US?

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

I think it is fair to say that there's huge difference comparing quality of life standards and asking if any given person would move there. Everyone has different needs and requirements. Career paths, ethnic group presence, weather preferences and your own personality quirks all count. In addition, I'm sure it's possible to have a bad time in Finland if I never met the right people or got on the right career path, but it would hardly mean that Finland is a bad place to live.

One thing to point out.
I have been learning hungarian for a few years now, because I moved there. Finnish and hungarian use a very similar grammar.
Those 2 languages are crazy. They are not similar to ANY european language. The most similar would be something like chinese or some ancient summerian or old egyptic. Whoever has problems of learning another indo-european language (spanish, german, french) will be LOST with finnish. Trust me...

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

yes the finno-ugric languages can be hard to someone who's not good with languages (as they're not indo-european languages but a group of their own), but most finns in the major cities speak reasonble english so it's quite possible to manage with pure english in the major cities (granted people do appreciate it if you take the time to learn finnish but you're not helpless here if you don't learn it (or you just learn swedish which is an official language here)).LaCroix wrote:One thing to point out.

If you want to master the language, that's true. But to get by it's enough to know the words and not worry too much about the conjugations, since context usually provides enough info to get the message across. It's just that the words are often entirely different, so you do have that hurdle.LaCroix wrote:One thing to point out.
