Just to clarify:

My hypothesis 1 was that the US public wasn't afraid to make a fool of themselves.

By answering a question with "I don't know/I don't remember" you will not seem like an idiot. By answering a question with a answer that you make up on the fly to people who knows the answer you will seem ignorant.
