I'm so fucking sick and tired of men whining about our lot in life. It's ridiculous; we hold the power, the authority, the money, and the prestige. It is good to be a man in society; we are advantaged in countless ways. I can't believe there are whiner men out there who try to act as though it's somehow a tragic misfortune to be born a man in today's society.
I was just about to hit reply and go on a similar rant myself (wouldn't have been as eloquent as yours, of course). Whiny men make me fucking sick, have you heard about this affirmative action for boys bullshit they're doing at some colleges because most of their qualified applicants are female? That just makes my blood boil. I just wanna say: You're a guy! You have every advantage. If you can't make something of your life, it's your own fucking fault! If you can't get into college, it's because you're a loser! If women are paying attention in high school while the guys are jerking around, then I say fuck 'em! They don't need special attention, and they sure as shit don't FUCKING NEED AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!!
I realize that a lot of the reason I've been successful in life so far is because I'm a white male and it's fucking easy to be a white male, and when I hear another white male complaining about how hard life and crying discrimination, I wonder where my baseball bat is.

yea its a valid point about men versus women for suicide, women due tend to choose the less violent ways to kill themselves.
Being a rome fanatic, if i were to try suicide (not even a possibility), i would definitely elect to "fall on my sword" (i would even buy a Gladius to acomplish this task)

Most women with the genes are carriers. You'd have to have a carrier mother and a carrier father. I did say that...[/quote[
And I didn't notice. Sorry.

Seriously - the menopause lengthens women's lives. Men don't have a menopause (no they don't!), and just fizzle out.
It's more the high-risk behavior the men of hunter-gatherer societies have to engage in. Hunting for someone armed with primitive weapons is dangerous, dirty work. The slower you get, the less likely you are to see tomorrow. And men also have that one-X vulnerability discussed earlier.
And primitive women have to survive to menopause first, before they can reap the benefits. Childbearing was dangerous, stressful business before the invention of modern medicines. Dying in childbirth, or shortly after it was a fairly common way to go for many women. (Though, admittedly, the problem was much, much worse for agricultural societies, since in those societies, women were pressed to crank out as many children as possible.)

Which is another good reason to have older women around who have survived childbirth and can aid the mother before, during, and afterwards.

one of the interesting points that one can compare is the life expectancies at different points in time
Basically i seem to recall reading that in 1900 men lived on average 10 years more than women, almost entirely because women die in childbirth frequently.
once childbirth was removed as a problem, women lived longer than men becuase it was socially unacceptable for women to smoke and drink lots of alcohol. This is majorly changing and at least among the small section of teens who smoke (33% of high school seniors apparently, way too high i say, and by smoke they mean smoke often, not the occasional, one a month social smoker) that I know there are twice as many girl smokers as guy smokers, seems becuase of the diet advantageous effects.
Also alot of men's lower life expectancy seems to be due to the higher male infant mortality rat

If you should ever visit certain regions in the southern and eastern United States, you may arrive that the conclusion that, while this sounds effective in theory, its effectiveness drops markedly in practice.
Once a male has done this there is usually little need for him after that, though fathering in many species is done by the male and female, a lot of species have the male simply die off or go and get laid with another girl before he dies.
This may be true in insect species, Val, but because of humans' tendency to be social creatures, and because of our early H/G civilizations, human behavior isn't really comparable to what you're describing.

Unfortunately, I'm a palaeontologist, not a physiologist, so I understood very little. (Whhhooooooooosssssssshhhhhh! In fact)
What I'd need to undersdatnd it would be addressing from a evolutionary point of view.
But I stand (slightly) corrected.

Alright, well basically there are three major differences between menopause and andropause.
Menopause: Cessation of the production of estrogen. Onset is abrupt (2-5 years). Occurs typically in mid to late 50's.
Andropause: Cessation of the production of testosterone. Onset is gradual (15-20+ years). Occurs typically in mid to late 30's.
The actual symptoms are remarkably similar.
Osteoporosis is a danger to both, as is an increased risk for diabetes and heart disease. The libido drops off. Insomnia and depression are also common. Urinary tract changes occur that can cause complications for both. There are of course additional symptoms that are specific to each genders plumbing.
