Interesting question. Reminds me of the fact that Italian hotels never have a 17th floor, because they apparently associate the number 17 with bad luck.

??? I grant you, many Italian hotels don't have a 17th floor, but it tends to be because most have less then 10 floors. In hotels high enaugh to have 17+ floors you have the 17th floor marked with a big 17 all right, in my experience.

I've heard that American hotels don't have a 13th floor or a 13th room because 13 is considered to be an unlucky number. Is there any thruth to that?

I've read that in a magazine as well, perhaps it's the same one... The reason why 17 would be considered bad luck in Italy was that 17 can be written as XVII which in turn can be re-written as VIXI, meaning "I have lived" or something like that. So the number 17 would then mean death.

I've heard the same thing, I think that most American hotels have a 13th room.

Anyways, isn't this all pointless in a way. I mean the 13th floor/room thing. Even if you don't put the number 13 on the door, it's still the thirteenth room, isn't it? The same thing with the 13th floor.

most american buildings that are higher than 13 stories, do NOT have a 13th floor in my experience, hotels especially.

You're right about the 17 being "unlucky" in Italy, but I have never seen or heard about a single hotel (or building) "missing" the 17th floor. I'm not going as far as saying there are none (nutcases... erm, overly supertitious people are a dime a dozen here), but even if there are some they are pretty damn uncommon.
