Look, in my time zone, it's 5 to midnight, I'm wired from a pint of cold coffee that I drank 15 minutes ago, and I'm grouchy. DON'T play funny with me. Make your point and be done with it, without all these unfunny 'jokes'.

Well, I got news for ya - I'm STILL grouchy, it's 10 past midnight, and the last thing I need is you to tell me that I'm pathetic when you can't even get a proper translation of the Bible. I don't have time for your petty put - downs, SO MAKE YOUR POINT AND BE DONE. I've said this already. I don't care why you're crying. Oh, and try and cite the Lazarus parable to me and I'll throw it back in your face. I'm that grouchy.

I faced a similar problem in my HS bio class. The teacher put NO effort into teaching evolution. And one of our assignments was to make a timeline of earths biologic history and I of course did it. but the teacher let the fundie kids do a timeline of the genesis myth.
Stupid fundies.

I'm not suprised. Some people can get away with anything by shouting enough. It's ridiculous that fundies can have their crap treated the same as scientific fact.

To be fair, there are a lot of places here that do teach evolution and well. My teacher in high school on the subject of creationism, simply dismissed it. Said the only evidence was 2000 year old book. She taught evolution and well.

Sadly, in the more ignorant parts of the country, fundies win. Ignorance perpetuates itself with those people. They grew up on fundamentalism and won't listen to anything else. If they'd just teach it the cycle of ignorance would be broken.

Indeed, light is slowky cracking through, on indivual cases, but as for the most part ignorant areas will have too be retaught in a new generation and put down the old one. The only solution. Atleast my science teacher for physics is a deist and supports evolution & the Big Bang. Funny how the Preppies get angry when anyone mentions evolution. Yet they have nothing too back it up.

I live in the US and I'd never heard of creationism either. Granted it's in San Francisco, but still...
[rant]Anyway, this is really sad, when teachers just skip over subjects. They're FUCKING SUPPOSED to teach the curriculum, and and what do they do? They don't teach it. For a cockamamie reason, too. You're being paid, dammit. At least make an pretend to make an effort at the curriculum.[/rant]

He's actually right. There is no mention in the Bible of a place where sinners suffer for all eternity. There are some allusions in Revelation to a punishment for sinners, I think, but the actual magnitude was just made up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Jehova's Witnesses believe that sinners don't go to Hell, but that their spirits simply aren't resurrected on Judgment Day?

In America, some of my friends gripe about how stupid science classes are. And I understand why they feel this way. In my old high school and my friends' old high schools, the science labs are deplorable and underfunded. The teachers are generally not very competent in their field. The really intelligent teachers either can't teach it in a way that the students can understand, or their classes are so hard that students shun away for fear of bad grades. There must be a stronger science curriculum in high schools. Better funding and better teachers are the way to go. Furthermore, science curriculums should be determined by real scientists, not politicians. College professors are probably the most qualified in determining the curriculum. Afterall, they teach science at the next level. They should have a better knowledge of what kind of material students should already comprehend before they enter college.

Ok, a teacher refusing to teach a subject in the book because he/she did not believe in it. What is wrong with this picture? The teacher is there to teach, despite if they don't believe in it. That's like me refusing to teach Gregorian chant or the Messiah or any other secular music because I don't believe in organized religion. You should go to the principal and let him/her know your teacher refused to teach evolution due to his/her beliefs. That is so wrong.

There is no such thing as a spirit. People are all ressurected on judgement day (excluding the 144,000 exceptional ones, who go to heaven to rule with Jesus straight away without judgement). People die. No immortal soul (that's not mentioned in the Bible either) will go fluttering off to heaven upon death, or spiralling down to hell, either. The lake of fire and sulphur as depicted in Revelation is actually symbolic of eternal destruction. Based on Gehenna (as the lake of fire and sulphur is translated in some editions too), the rubbish dump outside Jerusalem where trash was burned to prevent spread of germs (although the Jews didn't know that at the time. They were just following the patterns of the mosaic law), this lake of fire and sulphur is merely eternal destruction, not damnation. So, to recap.

All are ressurected (sans the 144,000 really great people who died after Jesus' covenant with the apostles) to be judged. Those who are worthy are to stay on Earth and be perfect and restore the Earth etc. Those who aren't are destroyed forever. 100 years after that time, Satan is let out of the prison that archangel Michael (AKA Jesus) put him in, and is set to tempt humanity into following him. Those who accept Satan are destroyed with him. Those who follow God will live for eternity as perfect humans on a paradise Earth. Nice, isn't it? :)

I live in the heart of the Bible Belt. This whole topic hits really close to home. Fortunately, all the science teachers I had where sensible and taught whatever was in the curriculum to the best of their ability. Of course, I could very well have been in the only Alabamian school system that actually did that.

Oh, and Australopithicus:
Satan is let out of the prison that archangel Michael (AKA Jesus) put him in, and is set to tempt humanity into following him.
Michael is *not* Jesus. They are two entirely different beings with different places in the biblical scheme of things.

So ... why the theatrics? Why can't God just snap his fingers and do what he wants? Gee ... this sounds a lot like a Hollywood production more than an accurate depiction of actions that an omnipotent being will take.

This year, I'm in biology, and if I am asked such a question, I'll yell out "Oooh! I do! I'm not a Creationist!".

I think it should be mandatory to teach evolution. People who insist evolution and creation should be taught alongside each other are idiots. The science classroom is not a political forum. You don't tell kids in math to "decide whether 2+2 is 4 or 5 for themselves".

Yes, free will is so overrated.

Not according to him and the rest of the JW's. SAB's got the paragraph they use to justify that on their JW page I think.

I wonder if he knows that the 144,000 Chosen are the renewed Twelve Tribes of Isreal.

Yes, technically the Bible does not mention a Hell. Traditionally, Jews believe that the souls of sinners just cease to exist, while the rest go to the afterlife (basically Heaven).

I still want to know what the hell is with this "Archangel Michael = Christ" garbage. I've never fucking heard of something so stupid as that (never the mind that Christ is suppost to be part of the Holy Trinity).

The Archangels (including Michael and Lucifer) were created (IIRC) between two of the Days of Creation (very early on, I think, but I've also heard that it might have happened before Genesis). Lucifer's rebellion, uprising, and banishment occured before the final Day. Christ, being the physical incarnation of God, CANNOT be an Archangel, since He outranks them (and I've never seen Jesus depicted with three pairs of wings, either). What you're saying almost boarderlines on hearasy.

But you're just a JW: a God damn cult, with no actual mythology, unlike Catholicism. Shit, the fact that you guys have been WRONG on the date for the end of the world SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW should be ringing a bell in your head that something might be up.

A few extracts from Skeptics Annotated Bible.
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/jw_list.html

John
8:58 - In this verse, by saying "before Abraham was, I am," Jesus claims to be God. Of course, the JWs try to change the clear meaning of Jesus' words by having him say, "Before Abraham came into existence I have been." I suppose this is supposed to mean that he was around as the Archangel Michael back then or something. The NWT translates "ego eimi" as "I am" everywhere it occurs except in this verse.

1 Thessalonians
4:16 - "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel...." From this verse, the Jehovah's Witnesses reason that Jesus is really the Archangel Michael.

It is mandatory to teach evolution. . . (at least, it is in most places in developed nations).

Oh, and to the person who asked if anywhere other than the US has creationists - yeah, we've got a few making irritating noises in Australia. Fortunately, what we also have in Australia in an extremely secularised society - we've got our share of people who aren't the brightest sparks on the planet, but they tend to expend most of their energy indulging in bigotry and xenophobia, rather than fundamentalism.
