My parents extended a bit beyond that....they continued the grudge until it got into the house....after that,. it involved belts, plastic serving spoons, a broom, and an aluminum pot in one instance.

Coming from my family, it's hard to gauge.
Yup, I got the wooden spachula once or twice.

There are a variety of methods to dicipline a child. Spanking is one of them, and it is not inherently bad, just easy to be misued. A lot of the time it is done out of anger, which is clearly bad.

In diciplining a child, one should communicate clearly why the child is being diciplined, and why said action is wrong. Before the child is capable of rationalizing, spankins may be the only way to get the point across. However, the "because I said so" mentality should be dropped as soon as the child is capable of understanding why certain things should not be done. In that case, there are other forms of punishment besides spanking that might prove better.

As a child, I was both spanked and not spanked growing up.

With my bio-mother, I was rarely spanked. In fact, I can't remember a time after I was 5 when I was spanked. Supposedly, she said that I didn't need it anymore, and that a good talking to was all that was needed for me to be straightened out.

With my adopted father, I was spanked a few times between the ages of 12 and 15, but never after. The only thing it did for me was piss me off (and once, that even got me a second round). But pissed off or not, I still know I did something wrong and deserved a punishment for it; whether that was a spanking or not is debatable.

I've also been struck in anger and frustration (step mother). Thankfully, it was very limited so whatever scars I have from it are minimal.

It comes down to the parent knowing their child, or children. For some, like me, a stern finger wagging works well enough. For others some physical force may be necessary to ensure the proper pecking order.

There still exists a line that seperates discilpline from abuse. This kind of issue cannot be solved as a society or a community, it's up to the parents to know before they've crossed that line. For those who do, punishment awaits.

Would I spank my children? My first wish is that I never have to make that decision. (I'd rather avoid it all together by not having any.) But if Providence provides, I know about the fear of being punished and I would avoid that if I could. Plus I know myself and I don't think I could spank a child, other than a single, immediate swat to the hindparts.

In all my life I must have been spanked at most half a dozen times, but it didn't quite work because I had a big butt. But there was one time my dad was so angry he took his belt and hit me a few times (I didn't feel it so bad, but I didn't feel my ass for a while either). I was so pissed off so one day I got all his belts and threw them away. Then my dad's pants fell down all the time.

I agree 100 percent. My parent whooped both me and my siblings asses good. Sometime we were soo bad, but ass whooping and scaring your kids is a Good thing. We'd get atomic pinches that hurt like hell, or a slap upside the head. I was a very polite kid to most ppl, and that's a quality that I rarely see in many kids.

My mom was really good in scaring us into not accepting rides with strangers, or even talking to them for that matter. We were either 5, 6 or 8 and she'd say that Child molseters are out there, and she when into very explicit detail about it. That scared the living shit out of me.

With all due respect (plus some more), though Franken has a similar style of humor, he's not the voice actor in the "Deep Thoughts" series.

To keep this from being completely off topic, spanking's bad.

Well, I never liked getting spanked, and even though I was pissed at my mom after I got spanked, the fear of getting spanked would keep me in line. For a few days, anyway.

As I've said before in an earlier thread that dealt with this very same issue, all I use is THE VOICE. As a last resort, out comes THE HAND. Woe to you if you are on the receiving end of THE HAND.

Spanking can be (and often is) confused with beating. IMO, spanking should be well-thought out and never done out of anger. For example, when I was a young'n, when I did something that earned a spankng, my dad would say, "Go find the paddle." What ominous words those were for me (or my sister)! There's something sinister about hunting for the instrument with which you're about to come into uncomfortable contact. Sometimes, I'd show up in front of my dad with the paddle after such an order and he'd say, "What's this for?" I'd quickly reply, "Uh, oh, I don't remember." That seldom worked, and he'd recall the breach in discipline that had earned me a spanking. The point is that he rarely ever hit me or my sister out of anger (my mom was a different story, but that is why punishment was generally left up to my dad). Of course, past a certain age, spankings become useless, and a parent must turn to other forms of discipline, like being banished to a room (preferably without Nintendos, computers, TV's, etc.).

The Anti-Spank crowd seems to be of the impression that a single swat across the hiney is the exact same thing as a hour and a half session of walloping with a Louisville Slugger. This is rediculous. Children test you, that is their jobs-- to see how far they can get with some ill behaviour before you set the limits. A quick and controlled butt-swat is more psychological than physical and displays clearly your displeasure.

Kids need parents to be guides, protectors, and disciplinarians. They don't need 'friends' displaying confusing signals about the kids role in the world in relation to society or authority.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

I'll tell you what's scary and a good way to keep kids in line without actually spanking them: snapping your belt. Hooooly shit, I can't tell you how effectively my dad was able to control me and my sister when we were being bratty with this harmless trick.

I have spanked each of my children only once in their lives, and I felt bad about it all through the rest of the day. My wife has never spanked either child.

However, when they get wild, she cannot control them. They ignore her, and when she raises her voice, they merely make more noise to drown her out. But when I bark, they stop immediately.

Yeah, Jack Handey is an actual person (though the events he describes may not be real), and he does the voice on the series of sketches on SNL.

Their voices are actually quite a bit different, though their style of presentation is similar, so a foggy memory could easily confuse them, especially considering the similar subject matter and style in Al Franken's sketches about the character Stuart Smalley. There was also an underappreciated movie based on said sketches, Stuart Saves His Family.

I don't think parents should their kids without remorse, but a good ing works. If you don't give your kids a good slap in the face once in thier life, they'll grow up to be brats. A good hollering would suffice too. My mom was ed and slapped as a child, but she grew up just fine.
