The one I feel sorry for
The one I feel sorry for is this woman's 15-year old son. After lifelong indoctrination, he'll be spending the rest of his life spewing fundie bullshit because he'll never have the opportunity to know better. Wanna bet that the "college" they send him to is some fundie/creationist outfit like Liberty University, where the mush filling that young skull will harden into concrete?Jennifer Henesey wrote:Thank you , you just proved my point to my 15 year old son. I was able to tell him how you would respond almost word for word. I will now put this with the rest of the junk mail I receive.
And notice that she "told him" how Mike would respond "word for word". Bet he never got the chance to examine the evidence for himself.
Fifteen years old and his intellect's probably already gone. Not even Catholic brainwashing is that destructive.

Thank you for that link. But if you didn't want to debate with me then you could have just said so in the beginning. If it was your intention to just trade links then here is mine:

Now if you are interested in a debate instead of link swapping then provide an argument and we will continue the debate.

I agree though, the son is the one we should feel sorry for. With a mother that stupid, the kid's brain is going to liquify.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

BTW, a few of those religious high schools have recently formed in Denmark, and they have currently came under scrutiny by the Danish Ministry of Education because they teach Genesis as a viable alternative to the Theory of Evolution....

Two words: Southern Baptists. I can say from living in Florida for a dozen and a half years that some of them are decent, nice, open-minded people. Unfortunately, they're the exceptions. I'll admit that I'm a Christian and not likely to change my beliefs, but I agree entirely with evolutionary theory (although I would like to see more evidence for macroevolution, but human lifetimes aren't long enough to see most species evolve). Creationism is bad science and bad theology. Biblical literalists like the fundamentalist movement are as bad for Christianity as groups like Al Qaeda are for Islam. I think part of the apparent "fundie density" also comes from sheer population. The US is number 3 in the world for population, behind China and India. China's officially atheistic, and India's main religions are both very open-minded. By comparison, UK is #20 on the list, and Canada is #35. The full list is at http://www.mrdowling.com/800population.htmlAsst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi wrote:The US has more fundies for some reason. I believe the oxymoronic "creation science" movement orgionated in America, and they want Creationism in schools. But that's because there aree more fundies in the US. Why are all the fundies here? I don't know. They just are. And why are there more fundies in the South?

Fundies voice opinion here because of the constitution... one of the bad things that have arisen from the freedoms that it attempted to grant. With 'freedom' of voice people open their mouths more and thus lower the overall sense of intelligence for the entire society. Its not like the US has an extraordinary number of idiots compared to other countries, its just that ours happen to open their mouths more...A Big Flying Fish wrote:I'm just curious about something

Puritan colonists stuck to the North, and a lot of failed royalty ended up in the South. The Confederacy (by the time it got to be known that way) was full of the trappings of quasi-Royalty. The Plantations, the honorary titles of "Colonel" bandied about, the castle-like mansions with acres of fallow soil... they missed their chance to be kings and tried to institute the next best thing here. Sigh.
I can't figure how they got to be such zealots, though-- they followed the same Christianity that the Puritans adhered to, but the Puritans, many following Calvinist philosophy, seemed a bit less uptight about others (although their own uptightness about themselves made up for it).

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

The Calvinist philosophy makes all the difference. Calvinist doctrine believes in double predestination, meaning some people are saved and others aren't, and nothing can be done about it. This can make them more elitist in some instances, but often makes them more easy-going, since in their philosophy you'll convert anyway if you're meant to be saved. The Southern philosophies seem to have been more free-will oriented, meaning they feel a compulsion to save you whether you want it or not.Coyote wrote: I can't figure how they got to be such zealots, though-- they followed the same Christianity that the Puritans adhered to, but the Puritans, many following Calvinist philosophy, seemed a bit less uptight about others (although their own uptightness about themselves made up for it).
