The US has more fundies for some reason. And for a more mysterious reason, these fundies always seem to say that America is such a godless country.

Some of our earliest colonists were fundies (Pilgrims, Puritans) and a lot of people have come to this country because they were fleeing religous persecution, or because they thought they could practice their religion more easily here.

BTW, a few of those religious high schools have recently formed in Denmark, and they have currently came under scrutiny by the Danish Ministry of Education because they teach Genesis as a viable alternative to the Theory of Evolution....

almost all of the idiotic dumbarsed hate mail that I've seen posted on the forums or on SD.net seems to come from the US. Is the general population there really as stupid as the e-mails make them out to be. Sorry to make comparisons, but in the UK (where I live), I've never, ever seen idiots on the level I see in some of the e-mails, although of course their are some, but I've just never seen a such a large density as what appears to come from the US

I believe the oxymoronic "creation science" movement orgionated in America, and they want Creationism in schools. But that's because there aree more fundies in the US. Why are all the fundies here? I don't know. They just are. And why are there more fundies in the South?

Two words: Southern Baptists. I can say from living in Florida for a dozen and a half years that some of them are decent, nice, open-minded people. Unfortunately, they're the exceptions. I'll admit that I'm a Christian and not likely to change my beliefs, but I agree entirely with evolutionary theory (although I would like to see more evidence for macroevolution, but human lifetimes aren't long enough to see most species evolve). Creationism is bad science and bad theology. Biblical literalists like the fundamentalist movement are as bad for Christianity as groups like Al Qaeda are for Islam. I think part of the apparent "fundie density" also comes from sheer population. The US is number 3 in the world for population, behind China and India. China's officially atheistic, and India's main religions are both very open-minded. By comparison, UK is #20 on the list, and Canada is #35. Fundies voice opinion here because of the constitution... one of the bad things that have arisen from the freedoms that it attempted to grant. With 'freedom' of voice people open their mouths more and thus lower the overall sense of intelligence for the entire society. Its not like the US has an extraordinary number of idiots compared to other countries, its just that ours happen to open their mouths more...

The Calvinist philosophy makes all the difference. Calvinist doctrine believes in double predestination, meaning some people are saved and others aren't, and nothing can be done about it. This can make them more elitist in some instances, but often makes them more easy-going, since in their philosophy you'll convert anyway if you're meant to be saved. The Southern philosophies seem to have been more free-will oriented, meaning they feel a compulsion to save you whether you want it or not.
