Earlier today, some teacher was yelling at some students for talking in the minute of silence. (I live in Virginia, and I have to say, the minute of silence is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.) Just because one or two people have to pray, doesn't mean that the rest of the class needs to shut up during that time. I can understand being forced to stand up during the pledge (we are all too tired to say it anyways, and when we do say it, a good portion of us remove "under god",) but that is at least showing loyalty to your homeland. Praying does not do that in any way, shape or form. All it does is force one to respect one other's religion.

Actually, I have never noticed one person praying during the moment of silence. They are usually sleeping, due to the lack of sleep induced by excessive homework. It should be called the "moment of rest."

Most people pray after/before school in organized religious "clubs" (aka, Young Christians Club, Islamic Students club, Jewish Culture Club...)

The thing is, they can make a moment of silence manditory, but frankly, NO ONE GIVES A SHIT! Therefore, it is pointless.

A moment of silence isn't religious. It's just to pay respects. Surely you wouldn't be talking about your girlfriend if others in your class are paying respects to victims of 9/11. That would be despicable.

In the Student's Rights and Responsabilities Handbook given out, it clearly states that the moment of silence is for "Prayer or other religious activities." I can understand having one during, say, a 9/11 anniversary, or Martin Luther King's Birthday, or Veterans day, etc. I would be paying respects too. So, it would be different if it was specifically dedicated to pay respects.

It's a moment of silence though. I would imagine he'd get in trouble for not being silent.
