It's not that intelligence causes atheism, but that it increases the likelihood of seeing through religious bullshit. Creationism is a fine example of an idea that is far more effective on stupid people than it is on intelligent people.

That makes sense I guess, and possibly appears to be additionally supported by some of the results in the wikipedia article:

Another study found that mathematicians were just over 40%, biologists just under 30%, and physicists were barely over 20% likely to believe in God

Biology and Physics seem to be the two 'key' areas in which having knowledge of them helps to refute many views largely sponsered by religion (Creationism / ID, the Young Earth theory). Maths may not be specifically relevant in the same way, but those who study it are likely to be intelligent, and probably have some Scientific grounding. Or am I reading too much into this?
