I think it might be good to distinguish between fundie asshole, which is a subset of Christian, and overall Christian in your posts: the claim that every Christian you've ever debated claims to be smart and can't spell is blatantly false when taken literally, though it's obviously hyperbole. I suspect that in this context, when you say "Christian", you mean "fundamentalist", but it's not clear.Superman wrote:Nothing against you personally (I admire the Catholic viewpoint that education is required to be a clergyman), but every Christian I have ever debated claims to have something like 3 PhD’s, and they can barely spell singly syllable words. Grades mostly reflect effort, not intelligence, and the IQ measurements are not very accurate.
Now, you obviously are a very intelligent person (although I find it odd that political science is somehow more interesting to you than psychology ), but every fundie asshole and his mom seem to honestly believe that they are rocket scientists...
I really try not to just assume that Christians are stupid..

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I'd refer to myself as a liberal Christian and no, I don't think Christians are automatically stupid. Christianity is not particularly "in your face" in the UK, so it's not like I come face to face with those with overt Christian values very much here. I like to think "fundamentalist Christians" are more of a vocal minority than anything else, and I do worry that people look at news reports where there's some fundie somewhere spouting off something crazy and think, because there's usually more news reports about these types, that they are basically what Christianity is predominantly about. "Christian acts normal; Does not get in anybody's face" is hardly much of a news headline, afterall. Neither are you likely to notice such an attitude unless you know such a person particularly well and get to ask about them, because by their very nature they don't go around shouting about their beliefs.
If a Christian acts entirely ignorant about the world around them in spite of the evidence we can see and touch I'll roll my eyes as much as the next bloke, and I'll consider them quite a cretin. But so far I've only noticed a handful of such types, and all on the internet.
