Ignoring all the homophobic bullshit, these people think that Russia is going to invade and take-over 5 or 6 EU member states without anyone doing anything about?!
They think that Iran dropping a nuke on Tel Aviv results in Israel essentially surrendering rather than the somewhat more likely outcome of the world's 6th largest nuclear power turning every city in Iran into radioactive ruins?!
Is anarcho-libertarianism the new communism?

Do you think that the same people that believe that gay people are possessed by the devil think rationally when it comes to potential international war strategy?Teebs wrote:Ignoring all the homophobic bullshit, these people think that Russia is going to invade and take-over 5 or 6 EU member states without anyone doing anything about?!

Correct me if I am wrong, but it was a mayor risk for the USSR to tackle with the USA, Russia is in the shadow of the USSR when it comes to military power. So, don't try to find the logic behind the idea of how a poorer, less equipped and less stable nation will do what a superpower will be able to do.
Credo!

Economic libertarianism is a wonderful example of a secular ideology that has many of the same problems as religion. Instead of approaching society as an engineering problem where the trick is to achieve a good balance of variables, economic libertarians divide everything into simplistic categories of good and bad (laissez faire capitalism = good, government intervention = bad), and mindlessly promote anything that fits into the "good" category and oppose anything in the "bad" category.Dooey Jo wrote:They seem to be more like some kind of cult than a political movement, with dogmas instead of theories and policies. What was it Darth Wong said about these people? It's like an engineer going "which one do you want, fuel efficiency or power, CHOOSE ONE OR THE OTHER, YOU'RE EITHER WITH ME OR YOU'RE AGAINST ME!"
Re: Is anarcho-libertarianism the new communism?
There was an entire thread talking about it when it came out. As you can imagine our Russian members got a kick out of it. It ended up with Stas photoshopping in Code Geass.Teebs wrote:Ignoring all the homophobic bullshit, these people think that Russia is going to invade and take-over 5 or 6 EU member states without anyone doing anything about?!

Seriously, Russia has no interest in conquering Eastern Europe. Mostly because it is a net loss, they would be nuked, they can get what they want by diplomacy and because they would take casulties.
As for Al-Queda invading Iraq, yeah, I'm pretty sure the locals are competant enough to prevent a mass invasion through the desert.
Re: Is anarcho-libertarianism the new communism?
Of course, because Russia can't wait to dive head-first into a truly epic anti-guerilla campaign which would inevitably be fuelled with copious amounts of money and modern weapons by the US and China. Seriously, dude - they are creaming their (communist) pants at the thought!Teebs wrote:Ignoring all the homophobic bullshit, these people think that Russia is going to invade and take-over 5 or 6 EU member states without anyone doing anything about?!
They either think that, or that Europeans are pussies who won't fight, because it's just manly Americans who ever fought for FREEDOM(tm)!

I agree, and that's why I think it is fair to put libertarianism and communism in the same category, like the OP suggests. My personal name for this kind of belief is "political religions"; political ideologies that act very like religions. They have the same faith-based, fact denying attitude as religion; the same compulsion to put the principles of the faith above all else. They even use very similar arguments; such as examples of bad results from following the faith's rules being due to the people or systems involved not being "real" libertarians/Communists/Christians/whatever.Junghalli wrote:Economic libertarianism is a wonderful example of a secular ideology that has many of the same problems as religion.Dooey Jo wrote:They seem to be more like some kind of cult than a political movement, with dogmas instead of theories and policies. "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers
