I didn't put a value judgement on it. I just pointed out the scale of the exchange. Someone like Bill Gates could buy a small country if he wanted to; picture some place like Gambia where he could give every man, woman and child $10,000.00. They'd probably take it.
Whether all this is good or not is up to individual opinion.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

What? You don't think we can withstand a bit of a temperature change? If we're powerful enough to cause any possible global temperature change, you don't think we can either reverse it or survive it? We have a wealth of technologies that can let us live through decades of severe winters or summer droughts--it would just take some effort to set up.The Earth can recover anything we throw at it, but humanity proably can't.
Greenhouses, canals, desalinization, genetically modified food, air conditioning...
Temperature change will not destroy humanity unless it happens immediately and manages to destroy much of our infrastructure.
And this only matters to us first-worlders. We've got people living with virtually no technology in frozen tundra and in arid savhanna.
Global warming or a new ice age will just annoy us.

THAT picture was a lot of snow? THAT picture? That was probably taken at -2 degree weather, when women here in Canada still wear miniskirts no longer than a handwipe and no underwear if they can help it, and guys wear extremely polished shoes.Durran Korr wrote: Good lord, that's a lot of snow. Yup. And even if Global Warming were happening now, there's no evidence it would be a bad thing, anyway.Average temp is calculated to increase--this cold freshwater flow is CAUSED by ice cap melting. In the event of global heating, some places would actually get colder. Some wetter, some drier. Point is, the avg. temp globally would increase.
Yes, sea levels would rise and flood some cities that couldn't get a good levee system up. Deserts would re-locate, grow, and shrink. So would rain forests. Some rivers would probably change course.
The temperate areas would move up in latitude a bit (and this could be a very good thing--it could open up more of Canada and Siberia for farming).

Hee hee, you don't know snow, do you? Snow weather is usually mild by our winter standards. When it's REALLY cold, the air is too dry to snow. You know it's cold when you can feel your snot freezing inside your nostrils. Americans ...Durran Korr wrote:Good lord, that's a lot of snow. How many inches is that, approximately?
Mind you, that's not to say there aren't those among our American neighbours who can handle real weather. They just don't live in the South, that's all. They live up near us, in places like New York and Buffalo.

We don't know how to deal with it, either; even the slightest freeze basically causes every school (public and private), business, and the government to shut down until conditions are safer.

Still mowing the lawn is feasible I do my parents to see whehter or not who will think I'm more insane...my dad or my mom.
Now driving without an air conditioner...that's different...no sane human should try.

You know, that's what really pisses me off about the weather in North America. I HATE hot weather. I HATE IT! And no matter how fucking far north you go, you can't get away from it. The winters become colder and colder, but the summer heat is just as unbearable in Maine as it is in VirginiaDarth Wong wrote:It hits 95F here in summer too, Shep. Hmm, I don't really mind hot summers. I do mind, however, being cooked alive during football games in the middle of October. Which has been the case this year.

Canada Day weekend, Ottawa was in a heat wave with Temperatures in that range and humidity to match. We had 4-5 days like that I think before the heat broke for a bit. We had a few more weeks like that throuhg hte summer too.
Canada: Where you go from +30C to -30C in 6 months, and where temperature swings of 10-15 degrees in a day or two are normal.
I still find it rather interesting that the Humidex was developed by Canadians and Wind Chill factor was developed by Americans.

Yup, we've got hot humid weather in Canada as well, and yes, they are my most hated days. I'll take freezing weather anytime over hot humidity.
Thankfully, we get fewer hot days than in the U.S. in general.
Nothing beats a nice blizzard, remember back when as a kid we'd all go out during the worst weather, pretend we were on Hoth, with hockey sticks serving as the all purpose toy gun / lightsabre....
