Geocentricity: did anyone else get this mailer?

Post by momochan »

Some time last week, a trifold bulk mailing arrived in my mailbox. It was from a group advocating for the Biblical principle that the earth is the center of the universe!

It pretty much looked like a download of their website:
http://www.geocentricity.com

Did anyone else get this? I heard from another member of my local atheist club that this group received $ from some millionaire(s) in the south.

Boy, some of those religionists are out there making the atheists' argument for us!

Dude, there's a fucking Flat Earth society, based in Kansas of course. If the Bible talked about flying pedophillic pink elephants, there'd be theists taking it seriously.

Thankfully Gmail's spam filters catch the worst of the crap that comes my way. So no, I didn't get it. :P

Huh. Sounds like it was your standard spam. Hard to tell from his original post, so I assumed he meant electronically.

The Earth is the centre of the universe only in the sense that anybody can call himself the centre of the universe, simply by putting his frame of reference on himself and saying that the universe is unmeasurably large in all directions. But that's a bit like saying that the Earth is supported by my feet, rather than saying that I am standing on the Earth.

I honestly think that the Flat Earth Society is a liar's club, and tongue-in-cheek to the extreme.

No, make that 100% certain they're not serious!

No, it was physical (snail) mail. So someone spent some money.

And unlike the Flatearthers, I think these guys are serious.

I read about this site over at Fundies Say the Darndest Things a few days ago. Apparently one of the persons behind that site has a Ph.D in astronomy from a respected university. How the hell that happened is another matter... The person is claiming that geocentricity explains the "grains of space", the Earth's night-time electric field and ball lightning.

The site you linked to is a parody, but there is a real Flat Earth Society. ( source ) Unfortunately, it does not have a website.
