Ten Commandments quiz

We've had other threads about the Ten Commandments, so I'm wondering how many people can list all ten off the top of their head. So go ahead, try it. List them all in your head, then check to see if you got them right. You don't need to get them in the correct order as long as you get all ten.

Jews, Catholics, and Protestants all have slightly different lists, so you can consider yourself correct no matter which version you list. But no fair mixing and matching from the different lists!

Yeah I can do it. I have to write them down to keep track and not repeat myself but I can do it. It's a left over from my Christian upbringing and the private Christian elementary school I attended.

Funny anecdote: my freshmen year at university someone from the local BS Ministry (Baptist Students... what did you think I was implying) was outside the dining hall asking people to name the 10 Commandments. To what was then my disgust (now quiet bemused giggles) I was the first of 50 people he had asked that could correctly name all ten.

Yes, but that's just a recommendation though, notice the carefully worded "should" vs. the other's "shall". That is why it is not so well known (even though the first ones conveys the same message).

Seriously, I can make about 8-9 commandments of the top off my head. The more tricky ones beat me.

I remember most of them, but not the order (except for the fact that the ones about killing and stealing are in the bottom half). In any case, I'm not too concerned about my recall of the Ten Commandments. It's not as if I'm part of the group which is pretending that they're sooooo important, after all. I can always look them up if I need to point out how stupid they are.

The commandments should be:

Thou shall have me as their God, as this will validate the rest of thine list.

Thou shall use my name in positive, happy ways

Thou shall take adequate steps to ensure that people around you are still alive after you have conducted your business.

Thou shall ensure that any and all property remains in the possession of the rightful owners.

Thou shall make use of their time constructively instead of worshiping false idols.

Thou shall say true things.

Thou shall leer at thou own wife.

Thou shall leer at thou own goods.

Thou shall have sex with your significant other exclusively.

And something about honoring parents.

Depends, are we talking the first ten, second ten which everyone uses, or the last ten which are the only ones called the ten commandments?

I can peg 7 of 10 of the "standard" and maybe 5 of 10 of the others.

The command of the old despotisms was 'Thou shalt not'. The command of the totalitarians was 'Thou shalt'. Our command is 'Thou art'.

Regardless of what we consider their relevance to be, and assuming the poll to be quite accurate, I wonder how our 27%/72% ratio compares to various churches. I'd be curious to see a breakdown by denomination.

Nope. Thats #6, behind four commanding the worship of God and one about honoring parents. can't remember the exact order of 7-9 myself but I know what all 10 are.

1: No other gods.
2: No idols.
3: Don't take God's name in vain.
4: Honor the Sabbath.
5: Honor mom and dad.
6: Don't kill.
7: Don't steal.
8: Don't cheat on your spouse.
9: Don't lie.
(again, the order of 7-9 may be wrong)
10: Don't covet your neighbor's stuff.

I couldn't do it, even after spending 12 years at Catholic schools. Still, that was 18 years ago. In any case, those parts of the commandments that are ethically relevant, I do anyway (don't steal, don't kill etc)
