A good sci-fi propulsion idea

Post by Raptor 597 »

Any for both normal speeds and revlatisic. How could I loophole going faster than the speed of light? Use or make up another medium.

Plasma combustion for subluminal, and an Alcubierre Warp Drive for supraluminal (look it up on Google, there's plenty of articles).

Thanks. Want a Spot in Clone Force now? :D Oh, and I was thinking of Plasma but I wasn't sure.

Think of a cool name for a peice of technology, and think up some of its characteristics like speed, duration, energy requirements, etc. Apply theses characteristics consistantly, but don't try to explain the mechanism behind the drive.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Infinite Improbability Drive (IID) or the Bistromath drive.

ROFL. If there's a minor bit part, I suppose so. The only reason I responded so fast is because those are what I'm working with in my own sci-fi universe, though I'm probably going to look for other subluminals also.

Alcubierre drives require enormous amounts of negative energy even if the theory works as advertised. We're talking galaxy-level mass/energy.

Much more interesting, IMO, is to take a ship up to almost c until the time dilation effects do wonky stuff to the ship's inhabitants. One could if I understand things correctly concievably create a situation in which the passengers would experience a month or two travel time during which they'd travel a hundred light years.

Ack...true, forgot about that. Even van den Broeck's version requires near one solar mass of negative energy.

Interesting. I take it that the speed limit is proportional to the amount of space you can warp, yes?

Do not fret. There is a fairly elegant solution in the online world Orion's Arm. It requires nothing more than the idea that we can create a short-ranged wormhole with attainable (yet huge) amounts of energy. Then you separate the two and place them on a separate ship each. Both ships travel wherever places you want linked, and drop them there. Bam - an interstellar highway.

Of course, in Orion's Arm, four wormhole-linked planets are a power to reckon with; the Negentropy cult springs to mind.
