The fallacy of composition

Post by Cairber »

I have a question concerning the fallacy of composition. When a food has an ingrediant in it that others consider to be poison, would it be fallacious of that person to claim that the food is poison because it contains a poison? (using the term poison loosely here, but its a conversation with someone who feels MSG is poison).

Yes, because what's poisonous and what isn't is often dependent on preperation and proportion. You can die from water poisoning, for instance.
