Technology supression by fundies?
Would it be possible if fundies try to supress the development of technology, lets say FTL drives, because they go against their beliefs?
Such as if sentient life other than our own existed, and they were actually older than the human race and knew our history, and would say that God doesn't exist, would the fundies try to supress the development of FTL just because of this?

They are willing to comit genocided to hold true to their beliefs, somthing tiny like supressing Techogoly would hardly be a blip on their moraility radar, Hell they did it for thousands of years already and they do it today with a varity of things(Most noticably, cloning)

atleast the Raelians are better then fundies; instead of hating technology because it could ruin their religious "proof", they hail it as that very proof!
if ET comes tomorrow, the Raelians will be the first to illegally create FTL ships and such if the technology is banned.

Fundies are already trying to suppress biotechnology and cloning technology because of their beliefs. This is not a hypothetical scenario; it is a fact.

Look at the Dark Ages; shortly after the fall of western Rome up until the midpoint/endtime of the Crusades. Complete domination of Western Europe by the Catholic Church. Compare to the Byzatine Empire, the Russian empire, and the Islamic empires of the time.
The Catholic Church oppressed all science and thinking because of it's psychotic fear of so-called 'heretical' beliefs- that is, anything which undermined their power or even questioned Biblical literacy. Up until the late 1200's and 1300's Western Europe mainly stagnated, until after the Crusades, when new ideas were brought back, the Church's power began to loosen, and new intellectual movements began to take shape and form.

It should also be noted that they oppose sex education and the teaching of biology, which is inextricably intertwined with evolution theory. Many of them also oppose geology, astrophysics, and cosmology, although they freely quote from one when they feel it is useful to attack another

That brings up another question: In the 23rd century, will the Amish be watching TV and driving Thunderbirds?Wicked Pilot wrote:Where do you think we'd be today if the Amish were in charge?
Anyway, fundies have supressed technology they dismissed as "blasphemous" in the past, and still do today, with technologies like cloning, as stated.

Well, if there's no good reason to hold a particular belief (don't know, a reason like ignorance maybe!?), exposition to the world will do the trick to turn children to a modern approach of things (Internet porn, high-school violence, obsessive gamers... all nice, modern things).

On the Raël subject, he (Raël, Claude Vorilhon) is worst than most fundies. My opinion is based on the fact that the guy takes science, and shrouds it in pseudo-science and magic-thinking. He butchers Science when he see fit (saying that humans were created 25,000 years ago), and it all comes down to a simple observation:
Claude Vorilhon is a control-freak, sex-crazed frenchman!
Those Frenchs, they did us same thing when They sent us Luc Jouvet (the guru of the OTS sect: many deads by suicide-murder )...

It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.

Well, the Amish aren't too bad. They're polite, they don't "push" their beliefs on you, and they make amusing overpriced "kitch" items like rugs and knick-knacks.Sektor31 wrote:I read somewhere that the Amish way of life is on the verge of disappearing. So no worries there.

While fundies will ALWAYS oppose technology, I think their days of downright stopping its progress are dwindling. It's nice to live in a world where anyone can play Dr. Frankenstein, and damn and hell the fundies and their high-up government connections.

There are types like that, but they're rare. People who insist on avoiding medicine because 'God heals the faithful'...makes you just want to inject them with something nasty and hand them a Bible.Admiral Valdemar wrote:Fundies would sooner shut my University down even if it were researching into curing diseases because, say it with me, TECHNOLOGY IS BAAAAD! I remember one lady at a formal function asking me if I ever prayed as part of my research. PRAYED??? When I asked, she said that "obviously, God alone holds knowledge of the universe", so why wouldn't I ask him for guidance first? What the FUCK would God care about arthritis in PIGS?

Interesting. Should I a) pray to an impossible concept of discipline in the sky created by the subconcious of humans many millenia ago to deal with the unknown or b) read Campbell and Reece Biology Sixth edition and use Encyclopaedia Brittanica?Lagmonster wrote:There are types like that, but they're rare. Which just shows how hypocritical and scared Fundies are. After all, Mankind has already tasted the fruit of the Tree Of Knowledge, according to those whackjobs. This has two possible outcomes: 1) We can already know everything, so there's no reason to not learn, or, 2) Since all the Tree Of Knowledge taught was Good and Evil, everything we've learned since is stuff God didn't know.

What I hear as the prevailing argument from fundies (specifically, in this case, non-specific Bible study dicks who come round once every so often, usually while I'm trying to sleep) is that in Eden, God gave mankind all the knowledge we were SUPPOSED to have to be happy, namely, 'worship God, eat, sleep, and be innocent of evil'. And everything we've learned since Eden is either 1) knowledge that increases the amount of or potential for evil on earth or 2) knowledge that we need to survive since the world since the world is now full of evil.SirNitram wrote:Which just shows how hypocritical and scared Fundies are. I wonder how many of them would mind if we told them that God didn't give us the info on making a computer or the Net for them to chat on ignorantly.

Mother of hell, yeah. If we ever get to a 'Contact' situation, where the representative chosen to go off and meet aliens on behalf of humanity is selected based on, among other criteria, whether they believe in God or not...I will fucking be the guy with the explosives on the giant government wormhole device of really big spinning-ness.Zoink wrote:Spreading the word of Jesus at FTL speeds is a fundie wet dreamSektor31 wrote:Would it be possible if fundies try to supress the development of technology, lets say FTL drives, because they go against their beliefs?
No alien culture deserves exposure to fundies:
Fundies: "Hello! We bring you guilt, syphillis and alchohol! Have a free Bible!"
Aliens: "........."
Fundies: "Have you found Jesus?"
Aliens: "Glerk schnock snak" ("Somebody set up us the bomb")
