Electrics experimenting?

Post by kojikun »

Anyone here do any experimenting with electrical this and that? Particularly high voltage and/or coil guns? :)

I have a fully functioning rail gun hidden in my closet. I'm waiting for some JWs to come by before I test out its lethality.

I tried that once. It was working. Sort of hard to see the lightning but really nice. Then I bumped a wire by mistake and it violently exploded.

lmfao

my 15KV neon transformer can make some nice lightning just by putting tinfoil around the bulb. I can get a BIG lightbulb to make delicious lightning with the right setup :)

specs for my lightnin ball:

#clear glass lightbulb, 5 inch diameter, ~2 in distance from filament to glass

#15KV 20mA 20KHz neon sign transformer

#Automobile ignition coil

i set it up like this:

connect the HV out to one of the input terminals on the ignition coil and to the output terminal. connect the lightbulb to the ignition coil output. put foil around the end of the lightbulb and connect that to empty terminal on the ignition coil.

turn it on and watch out :)

you get nice juicy hot pink-purple bolts arching from the filament in the bulb to the foil (or whatever you chose to use)

I would like to become an electrical/explosives nut who detonates everything he touches. How do I begin?

That depends on whether you just really wanna blow shit up, or want to build devices which can wreak serious havoc.

I have a vacuum tube amplifier that has enough high voltage capacitors and parts to give you a very nasty shock, and that's when it's turned OFF. Touch the wrong parts when it's powered up and you'll likely end up unconscious or dead. I also have a homemade shockstick that runs on a high voltage beer can sized capacitor.

My friend has a 1.2 Farad capicitor which he will install in his car to help drive his uberstereo. Now THAT's some dangerous shit.

1.2F @ 13.8v ~= 115J.

Short that thing and the results will be....interesting.

I have a AA battery recharger made from some tin, wood, and hand-soldered wiring.

But then again it was a middle school class project that I still have in my closet for some reason. At least it has a practical use :D

I put some capacitors and transistors and speakers and shit together some time ago. Turned out to be a device which produce a high-pitched noise when it's close to TV's. When I had had it running for a few minutes, I turned it off and put the 9V battery away. I then accidentally touched the antenna, and holy shit did it hurt, that fucking thing electrocuted me!! And it runs on just 9 freaking volts. I wonder what will happen if I make it run on 12, or maybe 24 volts  .

I know! And the moron doesn't believe me when I tell him it's dangerous.

"Come on, it's only 1.2!"

"FARADS, you douche! Most capacitors are measured in mircrofarads!"

"That's because they're small."

"...just disconnect the battery before you do any work on your car, OK?"

The impressive part is the circuitry that causes the "blade" to expand and retract smoothly.

When I was a kid, I once dissassembled a vaccuum tube based TV and put it back together in a purely random fashion. Because I didn't want to burn the top of my workbench while soldering, I laid down a sheet of tinfoil first.

Unfortunatly, I neglected to remove the tinfoil, that was in contact with nearly every bare junction, before I pluged 'er in. Before the basement was plunged into darkness, the power supply shot a four foot long bolt of lightning into the ceiling. (Some nicely grounded copper water pipes were located directly above my work bench)

I've stopped working with electronics ever since I soldered my hand into an integrated circuit trying to fit some capacitors in. Took three weeks for my hand to heal. Scary thing was I didn't feel a thing until the entire ridge of my hand was attached to the board (was holding the piece in as I soldered, solder ran down my hand, fusing the whole length from base of pinky finger to wrist).

What would be really scary is if all the while you were muttering, "Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated."

No, I was muttering, "37 connects to 68...38 connects to 74...OH SHIT!" Luckily the teacher understood why when he saw the board attached to my hand.
