How much storage capacity in an average human brain?

Post by Pistolero »

Hi all,

This has been bugging me for a few months now, and so far I have not found a decent response to this. What is the data storage capacity of the normal, average, non-fundie human brain? If I were to download what nowadays passes for my mind to my computer, how big a hard drive would I need to copy it all?

I shoot with my Mind.

I do not kill with my hand.
He who kills with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my Heart.

It is hard to really calculate, the brain is the most advanced computer in the known universe, but the human brain has 100 billion possible neural connections and synapses and I think the last estimated total memory amount was 10^9 MegaBytes.

Additionally it works with data at near a billion MIPS too. Elephants and Whales have slightly bigger and faster brains.

Hope that helps.

Well considering some people(Who's brains are no diffrent except in one or two tiny areas) can recall EVERYTHING about anything they want, I have a Cousin like this, I have trick perfect memey(I remeber useless things forever and I remeber everything I read)

But my Cousin... well he's only 14 but he can tell you every single word in your typical Harry Potter Novel... But he can also tell you where he was when he was reading and what he was wearing at the time, what time it was, what he could smell ect

He can remeber everything back to rougly age four perfeclty so lets set that a baseline and assume the 10 Megabytes per Mintue of Video/Audio/Extras

Assume humans can remeber just ten years

5259000 minutes during that time x10
5,295,000

5.295 Terabytes

Of course thats only assuming ten years, Normal "perfect" memeory fokes can remeber between 40-60 Years

So lets use 50 years
26300000x10=263,000,000

Or 263 Terabytes

Lets assume on the side of Caution that its more than that and Round up for convience and say 300 Terabytes should be enough to hold fifty years worth of information

If you're planning on downloading your memories and so on onto your HDDs then you better have a wad of cash and hope you don't clone your personality into the PC either. :D

I'm hoping the Fundies burn them down.

PC is the best, regardless of how many lectures phongn will give me on Macs. 8)

I could do with a bioneural/quantum computer though with DNA memory and fibre-optic/crystal bus and cables and stuff.
