Why do people even argue about god?

why do people even argue about the existance of god? it´s not like it even matters. it´s not provable nor refutable.

and if he´d be proven/refuted it wouldn´t change anything. if he doesnt exist, nothing happens, if he exists and is a cool god we´ll all go to heaven and party/fuck all day long. if he exists and is a dickhead we´ll all be cast into big pots filled with boiling water and learn to enjoy eternal torture. but we couldnt change anything about that anyway.
in the end it comes down to the question:"who fucking cares if god exists?"

People argue about it because, they look for fuliment and if their God is best they get a ego boost, so they try to put everyone else's belifes down.

they argue because their fearful. if god doesnt exist then they loose their place in the universe, theyre no longer important, or loved, or guaranteed happiness once they die.

fundies, however, argue because theyre Nazis and hate anyone not christian and many who are.

Fundies don't argue. They simply spout their beliefs and when you refute them, spout them again. That's not arguing; that's preaching.

Of course, I consider it the point of idiocy to get vehement about religion. Discussing it, certainly. Debating, most definitely. Allowing it to alter friendships or make you angry? Ridiculous (though I am guilty of getting pissed a few times...almost left this board once or twice early on). Nothing in religion is scientifically verifiable, which is why it relies on faith rather than proof.

salm, I think the relevance of the "why" can be show in this little situation:

A guy comes to your house and tells you you MUST, by the will of his god, be it from a mainstream religion, a cult or only a divinity just invented, the guy tells you to do or to cease something.

Be baptize! Give 10% of your money to the Church! Don't eat during the Ramadan! Make vow of poverty! Don't have sex before your wedding! Circumsize your boys! Remove your daughter's clitoris! Sacrifice your first born!!!

Those are all commandments gave to you by their god, YOUR GOD! Or so they say...

Can you face this situation without asking WHY? Do you argue with them?
If not, gave me your fucking bank account number and your PID, NOW! Jehovah commands you!!!

yes, of course i understand that. i should have posted my question more clearly. why do people START

arguing about god?
if it´s just because 2 people meet who have different points of views and have fun discussing that topic i can understand that as well.
the thing that bugs me is that a load of people (people on both sides) take that so awfully seriosly. both parties must know (ok, maybe the most idiotic fundies dont) that there´s not going to be a result.

you see, i only know that from the internet, and one visit to the us. people are really dead serious about all that religious crap. here, basicly nobody gives a fuck and these discussions dont even come up. i´ve even tried to do that several times out of boredom, but i really didnt get any reactions.
