Open-minded or Close-minded?

Post by Sektor31 »

Something I heard on a newsgroup, thought I'd share it here.

"The open mind is ready and willing to challenge the things that they believe in.

The closed mind will only challenge the things that they do not believe."

The question is, which one are you?

Foolishly open. I'm a little too quick to take a strange idea and see if it will fold into the known universe.

That's a stupid quote. The real question is: what are you open-minded to? If you are open-minded to observation and logic, you are a rationalist. If you are open-minded to new revelations from Scripture but not to logic or observation, you are a fundie.

"Close-minded" is an insult because we get upset at people who close their minds to whatever we think they should be open to. A fundie thinks a rationalist is close-minded because he has closed his mind to "evidence" which comes from Scriptural sources (for the oh-so-silly reason that it is hearsay written by primitive morons).

To close your mind to stupidity is not a bad thing. To close your mind to logic and observation IS a bad thing. It all depends on what you close or open your mind to. A completely open-minded person is either an idiot or an infant, because he has no critical thinking skills.

"Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brain falls out", I think that's how it goes. I'm open minded towards things that make sense, even if we can't fully understand or measure them. For example, one could put 2 loudspeakers through a bunch of tests and come up with identical specs, but they'll sound drastically different when listening to them. We can make educated guesses and theories on why they don't sound the same and then do some further testing to try to better understand things. Now if a person told me that they sound different because one of them was blessed by the pope I'll kick him in the nuts hard enough to make sure he won't be having any kids.

I am closed-minded to stupidity, and by extension, reality TV.

I think I am rather open-minded. Then again some will argue that I am close-minded.

If being "open-minded" means granting consideration to ideas that are clearly irrational, then I'd rather not be open-minded. Open-minded people pay Miss Cleo astronomical amounts of money for having her point out the blatantly obvious to them. Close-minded people tell her that she's full of shit.

I guess I'm close-minded because I want to hurt somebody when my mother's boyfriend wants to convert me to Islam... and take 3 very long hours debating with me about how I'll go to Hell because I'm atheist.

(Basically, everybody who's not an Islamic is atheist from their point of view)
