What does Christianity have that's original AND fun?
It's Easter and I'm stuck at home doing nothing. No malls, no movie theaters, it's all CRAP!
This begs the question. What original Christian occasion is fun? Christmas? All the gift-giving and yuletide fornication's taken from the Romans and pagans and heathens and idolaters. Easter? The chocolate rabbits and eggs are merely fertility symbols - I say symbols for testicles. Lusankya says their ovaries. She is wrong.
Even the Muslims suffer from the same thing. Ramadan? What the hell is up with not-eating? Like in Easter where you don't eat meats.
Mang. It's all no fun.

Well duh, everyone knows this. Judeo-Christian religion is not about fun. It's about guilt and shame.
The only way to make Abrahamic religions fun is to make up your own version of them, which is what the "prosperity gospel" American megachurch versions do.

Yeah... makes you wonder how such an un-fun religion ever got so prominent.

"Fun" was not a big part of peasant life until very recently. For almost the entire life of the Church, and particularly its greatest expansionary period, life was harsh, painful, and short. An unending story of back-breaking toil, disease, early death, and heartbreak, punctuated only by the occasional festival and the weekly visits to church where you were encouraged to make even more sacrifices in the vain hope that you would get a better life in Heaven.Shroom Man 777 wrote:Yeah... makes you wonder how such an un-fun religion ever got so prominent.

The thing is, there are plenty of "fun" festivals out there, plenty of which predate Christianity. Saturnalia, for instance, is pretty fun. And Thai New Year is basically everyone in Thailand getting together and having a massive water fight. In a tropical country, what's not fun about that? And it's not as though life was that much less crap in ancient Rome and Thailand than it was in early Christendom.
It's like the church leaders went out and tried to deliberately make life as un-fun as it could be.

If life was fun, then the sheep wouldn't be concerned about improving their afterlives, and that's no good for the clergy.

In the Middle Ages, European peasants actually had more days off than modern industrial workers thanks to all the feast days and holidays. Latin American countries still turn important saints' days into wild parties (and of course, there's Carnaval). It's the Protestants who have mostly cornered the market on stultifying boredom.

There is a bit of an inverse corellation between harshness of everyday life and intensity of parties, isn't it?RedImperator wrote:In the Middle Ages, European peasants actually had more days off than modern industrial workers thanks to all the feast days and holidays. JULY 20TH 1969 - The day the entire world was looking up
It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.

I noticed that in college. If someone with an easy major and someone with a hard major were throwing a party on the same night, you always went with the hard major. Also, the engineers and hard sciences majors always had more beer and better drugs on hand.PeZook wrote:There is a bit of an inverse corellation between harshness of everyday life and intensity of parties, isn't it?RedImperator wrote:In the Middle Ages, European peasants actually had more days off than modern industrial workers thanks to all the feast days and holidays. Easter as practiced today isn't even entirely Christian. The idea of a zombified savior is, but the timing isn't. It's logical (although we're talking about religion here; I suppose it's given that logic gets thrown out the window) to think that if Easter were commemmorating an event that it would be celebrated on a specific day, not based on the phases of the moon, which seems rather pagan to me.Shroom Man 777 wrote:It's Easter and I'm stuck at home doing nothing. That might be true, but those same engineer/science major parties have a distinctive lack of the opposite gender.RedImperator wrote:I noticed that in college. In my country its a tradition to visit most female relatives and friends in your town, and spray them. Usually by perfume and a small poem or song. Then the kids get a choclate or painted egg. It's a kids thing really.
Of course, traditionally it was done with a bucket of water. Nowadays, they just use soda flasks (not in drinks, bot special bottles).

At least in modern days religous holidays are traditionally days on which the whole family comes together with is rather rare nowadays. So for people who enjoy family meetings there´s obviously some fun involoved.
Personally i hate such meetings since i don´t like or don´t care for most of my family (besides parents) so it´s nothing for me and i don´t attend such meetings. But i can understand if people enjoy going home to meet friends and family get drunk with them and enjoy their company.
