If You Could Design Hell . . .

How would you go about doing it? There are several obvious options, but I'd like original ideas.

1. The pain trip. Basically, you get tortured over all eternity in every possible form of pain, including drowning in urine w/ feces, burning alive, mutilitation with dull rocks, etc.
2. Psychological trauma for all eternity. Forced to reflect on what could have been, what you could have done. Or, you are left in a state of eternal wanting: you constantly see someone you hate(such as Pat Robertson) go behind a curtain and have sex with gorgeous women, all the while knowing it will never happen to you.

Alternately, how would you arrange the orders of hell? Would it all be one pit? Or would it be like Dante's inferno, with circles of hell? I like Dante's idea, except on reverse: agnostics in limbo, followed by worse and worse degrees of punishment for fundies and criminals- wait, I forgot; we are supposed to be rational people who respect the idea of justice, and don't get pleasure from watching eternal suffering.

Psychological trauma. Sort of like a Sartran approach to Dante, in structure.

Definitely informing what could have been, what should have been, etc. But most importantly, emphasizing what was done wrong, down to the minutest details.

Include in there the physical trauma of the worst health situation for them.

Some people thrive off of sensory deprivation. In time, yes, you will go crazy, but what happens when you hit the point where you're used to talking to yourselves?

Well, then just bring back full blown sensory input.

I prefer taking a more personalized approach with my customers, and evaluate their punishment based on what they like and dislike. So, VR cubicles with custom torture programs.

I like the concept of hell provided by Sandman and The Night's Dawn Trilogy.

It's not so much that you go there, but that you bring it with you.

I would get rid of the eternal punishment bullshit and revamp hell, basing it completely on an eye-for-an-eye punishment system. Ironic that eye-for-an-eye justice is considered barbaric these days, it's certainly more just than the Christian/Islamic system of eternal punishment...

For as little real dogmatic teaching of what Hell is like (I personally favor the Russian interpretation of Hell as being a place of eternal cold, sort of like Siberia above the arctic circle, rather than eternal fire), there's even less of what Heaven is like. Anybody giving you the clouds and harp music bullshit is feeding you exactly that: bullshit.

Personally, my version of Hell is more "low-level constant discomfort" than "high-level unending agony." Because after a while when you're in constant agony, your sense of it turns off. But there's no ignoring the discomfort of half an inch of freezing water in your shoe, or being caught outside on a cold day with enough clothes on to keep you alive but not enough to keep you comfortable.

Earth: Final Conflict used SenDep prisons where you were in a tank of water drugged up so you could barely move and you were compeltely deprived of all sensory input. If I ever get my empire, I intend to implement this kind of prison.
