Need help with Time dilation question

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

I searched online to see if there was some sort of simple conversion calculator and couldn't find anything. Or if I did, I prolly was not able to understand the math -_-

But basically...
If you have a ship going at 20% of C, and it travels 2ly, how much time passes for those on bored? It is easy to know how long it will physically take the ship to get there, but on the ship itself, what would the time be like? Is 20% not enough for a noticable differance?

Did you check Mike's calculator? I thought it was pretty self-explanatory.

It's Jodan, not Jordan. If you can't quote it right, I will mock you.

Using the calculator, the time dilation factor at .2c (59958491.6 m/s) is 0.979824. Since it would take ten years to travel 2 ly at that speed, a little over 9 years 291½ days would pass aboard the starship.

The math is easy.
T' = yT
where T is the time in the frame of the stationary observer, T' is the time in the frame of the moving observer, and y is the Lorentz factor, y = 1/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)

Compute T by dividing the distance in the frame of the stationary observer (2LY) by the velocity, then compute T'.
