Laser fusion was so extensively used in the SDNWorld...

Too bad IRL we figured out it fails. And fails so hard that there are several obstacles, some of which might be fundamental...

I don't think we can simplify it as easily as "NIF didn't work therefore inertial confinement fusion is impossible." Though it's not encouraging, I admit.

We can't and should not simplify it - although once you get to the core of the problems at NIF (which not all articles are eager to explain in detail, if at all), it seems that wrongly predicted behaviour led to the assumptions that underpine the very ability to get fusion that particular way - though other ICF projects unrelated to NIF may yet bear fruit, I'd be really interested to see what they have in mind to deal with the now-apparent issues.
