There is nothing in the bible saying that a person should refuse medical treatment. Jesus certainly says nothing about that.

But I think I have an idea as to where some of these über-Fundies are mining this particular idiocy from: the story of the old crippled woman who came up and touched Jesus in the hope that the mere contact would heal her. In the biblical story if you recall, Jesus felt the power flow out of him and the old woman was cured, because her faith that it would be so permitted the miracle.

This is what I believe is the basis for the belief in spiritual healing; counting on faith alone to bring about the cure. And for this, some of them will sit by and watch their kids/wives/husbands/loved ones die slowly and needlessly.

The paper had an article in the weekend magazine about courses for converting Muslims. It turns out that they're legal (in the US at least).

After reading that I had a few thoughts:

Thought 1: When I become dictator of Australia, I'll ban that kind of stuff.

Thought 2: The following groups might dislike it:

• Those who are attepting to convert others (They will see Australia as a hard case, and will redouble their efforts).
  
  Moderate Religious people (they will feel unfairly discriminated against by being lumped in the same group as the Fundamentalist dipshits).

  Me. The above three groups will complain about it, and of course they'll expect me to do something about it, so I'd have to order a few massacres of Christians and the like to keep it quiet, and that's really not very efficient.)

I think part of it may also be the fact that science tends to draw people away from Christianity. Science is therefore viewed as evil, and the Bible contains a lot of phrases supporting this kind of mentality, attacking so-called "worldly wisdom" as falsehoods which lead you away from God. Why else do the Amish live that ridiculous archaic lifestyle of theirs?

Since technology (including medical technology) is perceived as science-related, it falls under the same prohibition for some people. They just draw a different arbitrary "science vs religion" line in the sand than the Amish do.
