life rights
Mars, 2012 A.D
The probe no_name has arrived to Mars in preparation for the first manned NASA-ESA Mars expedition.
A fantastic discovery is made: there is microbial life on the planet.
It is harmless to Earth life.
A great discussion arises on Earth.
Some say all colonization plans must be scrapped and the number of scientific expeditions reduced to a minimum.
Others defend that it is possible to take possession of Mars without harming the indigenous life forms.
After all, we always have put Earth life second to Human needs, so why should we limit our expanding through the Solar system if this times efforts will be taken not to harm some microbes?
Facing the indecision, everybody came asking advice from the most clever person on Earth
What will you answer?

Well, let's see now...since this isn't Star Trek—
—where everybody dances around the fate of every amoeba, in which we work according to how things go down in the real world, we can certainly preserve the microbes in a pristine Martian environment maintained in a chamber.
Then we pave the planet.
Then we pave the planet.

To hell with the microbes, we've sent bigger and better forms of life to extinction, nobody would miss a bunch of microbes on an otherwise dead planet.

Har to alien microbes deserving a damn. Har I say.
Now, if we ever meet aliens, I want it to go down precisely as it is in Alan Dean Foster's 'The Damned' trilogy.
Where all the aliens are clockwork oranges and can't fight without getting ill, and they have to face down an alien enemy that are technologically advanced but have the combat value of a lemur with a grenade, and us primates are pound-for-pound faster, tougher, and more dexterous, and really love some good old fashioned bug ass-kicking.

The great one walks forth from his temple of serene logic;
"With gun and bomb and virus charge, smite the alien,
With flamethower and acid granades and high explosives, Destroy the alien
With radiation and poison and plasma, annihalate the alien
Kill them Kill them Kill them all!!!"

Well, then imagine a big fat dodo type race spread through the surface and ready for harvest.Cpt_Frank wrote: And additionally microbes are impossible to kill, they will survive even if we colonize mars.
The poor bastards though the world was theirs..
BIG MISTAKE.
And you could also add some ape-like intelligence.
I mean, how far will it go?
If we discovered a world full of cavemen, would we take possession of it?
I think so, because in the end..
THE STRONG SURVIVE.
I realize this is to much startrek BS, sorry. But if we think it this way, then it's a jungle out there

Of course, the animal rights wackos will bitch about the microbes, and prevent us form landing on Mars. They don't even need to mention the microbes! They can say that there are many species of intellegent life on Mars, and if we land, they'll all become extinct. Logic is not necessary for them.

Okay, microbes on a dust ball are one thing. If they're alien, and can't hurt us, why do we even care?
Now, if you're talking about a lush planet, ala Cretaceous earth, the scenario becomes different (not to mention that it may put us in the position of having to really fight for our right to be there, dependant on the atmosphere and quality of carnivores).
Assume that you found a planet that was lush with life, but was very low in oxygen, to the point where we'd have to destroy their environment to live there. Then what would you order?

Genetic manuiplation of Humans/And Or Bio-Domes on the planet to protect us while we Manuiplate them and rase the oxygen levelAssume that you found a planet that was lush with life, but was very low in oxygen, to the point where we'd have to destroy their environment to live there. My decision: domesticate higher life-forms, fuck the microbes.

We've tried to commit genocide against microbes before. Smallpox, for example. And I, for one, am sorry they didn't finish the job (the US and USSR deliberately kept samples for potential bioweaponry purposes).
They're fucking microbes! Every time you buy a can of Lysol, you are deploying chemical weapons to annihilate microbes en masse, and the last time I checked, no one was guilt-ridden over it.
