Energy to 'vapourise' a concrete wall?

Post by El Moose Monstero »

Not really vapourise I suppose, but it needs to be reduced into 'dust', so I suppose about a few hundred micron sized particles. The wall itself will be approximately 12m tall by about 40m long, perhaps 1m thick, and the effect needs to be a total destruction rather than a building demolition style effect (i.e. the entire wall has to reduce to dust, not just collapse into dust), so what calculations do I need to do to work this one out? (and what relevant information do I need and where can I find it?)

My physics understanding is about 1st year undergrad level, so nothing too complicated :)

EDIT: and while we're at it, can someone point me in the direction of the energy needed to vapourise the Earth and all matter on the surface?

Well, I assume that the replies were lost in the reset, ah well.

...Anyway, in the end, we managed to work out that the wall destruction, provided that it is already broken up into small chunks (which isnt really the plan, so I'm still working on that) has an energy of around 5-6 megajoules.

OK, so I missed any follow-ups and calculations in the thread, but grinding up an intact wall or wall in chunks isn't really going to be much different. The machine uses chunks because of the need to feed manageable sized pieces into a manageable sized machine. If you consider segments of the wall, the energy needed to grind up that chunk isn't really different if its attached to another larger segment. The size of the piece just determines whether the machine in question can do usefull work on it.

I think the real problem is if you want to calculate the minimum amount of energy needed to pulverize the wall. If you used the rock crusher specs, its probably way below that number (maybe its only 5% efficient, I don't know).
