Is anybody else like this?

Post by Bug-Eyed Earl »

I hardly post in this forum because I think there's no point in saying something if someone else has said it better. but I read just about every thread.

Is this even worth keeping open? I think so; we might yet get a good discussion out of it.

I post comments infrequently, or more usually, post a topic and see what happens.

I've made it a personal point to post only if I feel I've got something meaningful to say, which means that I just read a lot of topics because others have already said what I would have said had I been there first. That tends to happen a lot on this forum.

I post very infrequently, either when I have something to say that hasn't been already said or when I can't resist making a joke. But I make a point to say something on topic in the post anyway.

I sometimes try to follow advise my dad gave me long ago, "Son, before you open your mouth to say something, first think to yourself, 'Does anyone really want to hear this?'"
As some of you have seen, I'm not good at following that particular advice. :)

I don't post that often - but I'm always around, and rarely miss anything important. The nice thing here is that there are enough good minds that any addendum or counter-argument I might think of has usually already been brought up by someone who is a faster typist than me - and I abhor posting 'me too' posts. The rest is, well, like this, a bunch of functionally relevant spam. :)
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Personally, I think your dad was just telling you to shut up, but in such a way that it sounded like wise, fatherly advice.

In any case, I've never seen anything atrociously stupid from you -- but then again, I'm not one to talk.

I'm somewhat the opposite--this is the only forum here that really interests me. Although I haven't posted in a long while because I had other obligations to worry about.

Sometimes it seems to me that there are a few people here more concerned with their post count than anything else and rarely contribute anything significant. However, there is a greater number of high posters who always have something new to add. That says something about the quality of the board in general.

The SLAM forum seems to be the worst victim of the former; poster A mentions a "Fundie" site and posters B-Z pop up merely to say "idiots" or some variation thereof.

Personally, I don't know why post count is so important.

Judge me by my post count do you? And well you should not......

Heh, my dad actually had a t-shirt made for me when I was in elementary school that said, "TELL ME TO SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP"
I had to wear it a few times too, although I generally hid it beneath a jacket. I suppose you could call that wise fatherly advice, but with a combination of me as a hyperactive motormouth and an outspoken and authoritative father, my childhood was at times ...... interesting.
