A short personal introduction.
Hello, all. I just thought I’d drop by and introduce myself, incase any of you were wondering why I’m the way I am (strange and often times incoherent).
Now, before you all start screaming at me for being in the wrong forum, let me explain. My father grew up in a somewhat strict Mormon household, and as such was forced to attend church. He hated this. So when he got married and had two sons he and my mother agreed not to utilize any religious teachings, instead letting us decide for ourselves. Fast forward to about three years ago, my best and only friend in the world has died, forcing me to contend with grief the likes of which I have never felt, and I’m desperate to find meaning in the world.
I tried religion of all kinds. I went to more churches, temples and synagogues than I can remember. Everywhere I went I sought to find some higher source, direct evidence of some god working through the hearts of man. And yet none had achieved a state of being that could be described as anything more flattering than “deluded.” I found people resorting to racial and social bigotry, people who clutched at lame two thousand year old superstitions for no reason but because they were told to. Even the most moderate of them could not hope to stand toe to toe with me on an intellectual level (not because I’m smart, mind you, but because they were so very, very stupid).
In the end I was forced to abandon outdated concepts of the universe and accept only what I personally understand, which of course is science. And I’ve never been happier.
The reason I write this is that I have seen threads in which people have asked about arriving at religion by logical thinking rather than being inducted by their parents or other friends and relatives, and I have heard people say that they intended to let their children decide for themselves like me, but I have not seen anyone who actually did this. Please keep in mind that I discovered this wonderful site relatively recently, and if anyone has written a similar story of self-enlightenment I apologize.
Please feel free to post whatever comments you may have.

Welcome to the board! I am sorry for your loss, however I give you fair warning that we do have some whacked up fundies here and I imagine that they may try and pull you up on the whole faith issue.
Hope to read more from you soon.

Yes, welcome to the board. I think you'll find it an enlightening place.

PS. On the subject of those people who say that others have "found their way to Christianity through logic", I think all rational observers recognize that this is a worthless pile of bullshit. It's more like they "found flimsy rationalizations for their instinctive and reactionary collapse back to Christianity after briefly trying to rebel against their childhood indoctrination".

I tell ya Mike, childhood indoctrination is the way to go. Certainly keeps me a believer even with a total lack of evidence.
No, I'm serious. It does.

Wow. After seeing the way you guys have reacted to some people on this forum I'm suprised I got such a warm welcome. Of course, with the dumb shit these people keep saying it's no wonder you guys lose your patience.
I regret to say that I must bid farwell to the people here who have so quickly earned my respect. You see, tonight I'm checking into a hotel so that tomarrow morning I may be shipped off to Navy Boot Camp. It'll be at least two months before I have internet access again, and unless they have computers as Navy Nuclear school it will be two years! Oh well, I look forward to being a part of this board in the future.
And for those of you who were wondering, I don't normally speak like this. For some reason whenever I write in the first person point of view I end up sounding like a diplomat
