Ban the bible
It causes much more violence than any videogame, song, board game etc...
Just look.
The crusades: Knights, listen to clergy and try to take back the holy land, killing tens of thousands over hundreds of years of war
The spanish inquisition: The spainish church gets a free hand in religious descions, kills and tourtures thousands
Expansion through the Americas: European settlers used religion as an excuse to persecute and kill Native Americans
Yet no pc freak has yet tried to ban the bible, Why?
Just look.

Not to defend crazy books or anything...but look at the timeframe you've given for the "evils the bible has caused"..it's like centuries dude, and if people hold something like a book close to their hearts and it tells them to believe the political power of the time, or the interpretation of it is thus, it would happen with any book.

The Bible caused none of what you listed. Men bent on evil who used the Bible as an excuse to commit crime and murder caused what you listed. One can take a single passage from nearly anything in order to attempt to justify violence and mayhem. Banning the Bible would be a galactically stupid thing to do.darthdavid wrote:It causes much more violence than any videogame, song, board game etc...

Because they'll get blasted by an army of angry Christians, that's why. If Quake's religious following had more clout, the'd crush those against them with ease.darthdavid wrote:It causes much more violence than any videogame, song, board game etc...

If we ban the bible we're no better than the Christians.

Not to mention there's the freedom of religion. Banning one of the major texts (If not only to some groups) of Christianity would be a clear infringment of that.
Hell, wouldn't banning it be an infringment of the Freedom of Speech?

Good point. How about we ban all religious texts from government buildings. Except the white house, that happens to be the president's residence and it would be an infringement on his rights to ban it there. So no more swearing on a bible in court etc...(though you can still probably swear at the bible in court

Yeah, it's not like the bible teaches that non-believers are evil or anything like that.jegs2 wrote:The Bible caused none of what you listed.

Interresting how the bible has succesfully been used as an excuse for some of the most horrific attrocities in history despite the fact that it is infact a very benevolent book, from a kind and gentle god who would never kill thousands upon thousands for failing to live up to his standards.jegs2 wrote:Men bent on evil who used the Bible as an excuse to commit crime and murder caused what you listed.

Indeed, but in the case of the bible it is not just one sentance, it's dozens of verses.jegs2 wrote:One can take a single passage from nearly anything in order to attempt to justify violence and mayhem.
I agree, banning books is never a good idea, but if any book deserves to be banned the bible does.jegs2 wrote:Banning the Bible would be a galactically stupid thing to do.

Re: Ban the bible
And yet, even with the past history of massive violence which can be directly traced back to the Bible, its editors haven't changed a god damn thing. If these "holy scriptures" are so vulnerable to abuse, then what exactly makes them holy?jegs2 wrote:One can take a single passage from nearly anything in order to attempt to justify violence and mayhem.darthdavid wrote:It causes much more violence than any videogame, song, board game etc...

EDIT: The whole point of this thread is that, with anal, yuppie, incompetent parents rushing to ban anything that might possibly lead to violent tendencies in their children, they skip over the Bible, which has the benefit of assumed righteousness. The reality is that the Bible has a higher body count than even the most skilled FPS-gamer could even dream of producing in any game, and virtually all of the death in the Bible is because of people praying to the wrong invisible man. At least in a FPS, you can argue self-defense (and in the case of Counter Strike, the War on Terror).

Re: Ban the bible
If I listed here the number of books folks want banned, you'd finsish reading it before you turned 100, maybe. Banning any literature is stupid, short-sighted, and idiotic. Why don't we gather around a great big bondfire, screaming, "Seig Heil!" while we burn all the books with which we find disagreement? At the same time, we'll gather up those who "don't belong" and those with who we disagree and ship them off to "relocation" camps, where they'll never be seen again. But be careful, or it might be you who winds up "relocated."Sir Sirius wrote:Yeah, it's not like the bible teaches that non-believers are evil or anything like that.jegs2 wrote:The Bible caused none of what you listed.

Re: Ban the bible
However, the interesting thing is that if you excluded books which are hated for violating religious beliefs, the list would be far, far smaller. Once you take away books that are hated for religious reasons, all you have left is white-supremacist nonsense and things like "The Terrorist Handbook", all of which have an extremely tough time finding publishers and distributors anyway. And of course, the Biblejegs2 wrote:If I listed here the number of books folks want banned, you'd finsish reading it before you turned 100, maybe.

Actually, there are many things which are banned. Publication of national-security information is not allowed. In many countries, publication of hate literature such as "Mein Kampf" is not allowed. While book-banning is not an ideal remedy, it does not necessarily make people into Nazis.Banning any literature is stupid, short-sighted, and idiotic. Why don't we gather around a great big bondfire, screaming, "Seig Heil!" while we burn all the books with which we find disagreement?
Slippery slope fallacy. At the same time, we'll gather up those who "don't belong" and those with who we disagree and ship them off to "relocation" camps, where they'll never be seen again. But be careful, or it might be you who winds up "relocated."

True, but we'd have less of them, and fewer people would be as eager to give up their lives. It's much easier to give up your life when you think Heaven awaits you, as opposed to silent, empty oblivion.HemlockGrey wrote:You know, if religion never existed, we'd still have massively bloody wars stretching far back into antiquity.

I don't know if we'd have had less of them. When you cut through the dogma, religions are essentially differing, particulary esoteric ideas. Any difference in ideas invites conflict. Simply altering the ideas involved does not change the potential for conflict, unless they are completely identical.True, but we'd have less of them, and fewer people would be as eager to give up their lives.
