Which religion is the least harmful

Post by Guest »

I'm catholic, but I'm thinking shinto or buddhism. Some none god based religion. However, reincarnation religions are weird since who cares what happens in your next life since you won't remember what happened in your previous life. Is the point of buddhism is to eliminate suffering in your present life by achieving nirvana?

I would have to go with Buddhism. I mean, hell, Buddhist monks sit there and light themselves on FIRE to express discontent instead of hurting other people. How bad can it be?

At which point you don't reincarnate, I think...but I could be wrong...

White (as opposed to Black or Grey/Red) Paganism isn't harmful.

Necessarily. Philosophy, in a sense, COULD be considered a religion...it really just depends on who you talk to.

Zen Buddhism or Taoism; the two I favour.

And of course, there's always the Church of the SubGenius. 8)

I've heard Buddhism and Shinto in this thread already, but I'm suprised I haven't heard Deism. Doesn't that qualify as being pretty harmless?

I believe the question regarded a religion without a deity figure at its centre. But Deism would be fairly non-harmful, since it renders the concept of God a purely philosophical one.

You eliminate suffering for yourself PERMANENTLY by achieving nirvana. The Buddhist concept of suffering is somewhat different from the normal definition. Essentially, all of life is regarded as suffering, even joy and pleasure, for they only make you desire more once it's over.

Eagle-eye hindsight. We've got the benefit of an extra couple of thousand years of human introspection to build on :)

I think the point is that faiths like Buddhism, Taoism and Deism are very philosophical in their outlook, and very much about seeking understanding of what works when dealing with ourselves, other people, and the rest of the world. That philosophical core stands them in very good stead, particularly when contrasted against the dogmatic tenets of the Hebrew traditions.

Buddhism and Paganism. The most harmful is my new cult of "Dark Druids" At last we will reveal ourselves to the Druids, at last we will have our revenge. *Inside Joke*

The Church of the Invisible Pink Unicorn (Peace Be Unto Her) (May Her Hooves Never Be Shod) is the least harmful. :D
Seriously, I think Buddhism or Theism or the ones where the theological aspect is geared towards philosphy rather then self-promotion.
