Georgia School Board Bans 'Theory Of Math'
COGDELL, GA—The Cogdell School Board banned the teaching of the controversial "Theory Of Math" in its schools Monday. "We are simply not confident of this mysterious process by which numbers turn, as if by magic, into other numbers," board member Gus Reese said. "Those mathematicians are free to believe 3 times 4 equals 12, but that dun [sic] give them the right to force it on our children." Under the new ruling, all math textbooks will carry a disclaimer noting that math is only one of many valid theories of number-manipulation.

Don't forget how the Bible proclaims that pi is exactly 3. No more teaching our impressionable youngesters that athiestist 3.14... crap.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

A round sea which is ten cubits wide and thirty cubits circumference. In other words, according to the Bible, pi is 3.00

I'm sure it was just a joke, although it does highlight the idiocy of the democratic method of determining scientific validity.

*cough* ok sure sure the bible says 30 cubits but thats called an ESTIMATE :P

"And he made a molten sea, ten point zero zero cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five point zero zero cubits: and a line of thirty one point four five cubits, rounded up to thirty one point five cubits to keep significant digits, did compass it round about. And he said with a great booming voice 'Thou shalt not forget uncertainty and imprecision. I may I am god and shall be anal if I please'"

I think you're missing the point, which is that there is no such thing as a grossly inaccurate estimate in something which is deemed perfect.

Of course, that's not a problem if you accept that the Bible is non-literal at best and useless bullshit at worst, but it is a big problem for fundie idiots.

LOL true enough Mike. Fundies would take that literally, wouldn't they? Guess theres no accounting for imprecise measurements of pi..

Interestingly enough, a student in my math class actually did claim that Pi was 3, and he used that verse for evidence. The math teacher shot him down.

It was not pretty to watch.

We'll you might be able to construct a coherent argument for this if you could build a case aginst the base ten system.

Speaking of pi, what's the point of calcuating it to 5 billion digits? Just 3.14 will get you through college, or at least in America.

Calculating pi to ever more higher decimal places is a great way to test the capability of supercomputers. Since pi is a transcendental number, it can only be represented by infinite series. Calculating pi to the zillionth decimal place would require many calculations in order for the series to converge up to that point. Thus, it's a great way to demonstrate processing prowess.

Not only that - it is also used as one of the ways to test new processors and architectures - i.e. we know pi out to n decimal places, so get your new computer to start calculating pi for a while. If it gets it right out to a certain number of decimal places, you say 'yup, it pased the test'.

As for why mathematicians do it in the first place - well, I'd call it curiousity. A number which is completely deterministic, but entirely unpredictable? That's just trippy. . .

How do they get the calculations for pi, anyway? It can't be represented with a fraction, and you can't know the exact circumfernce and diameter of a circle without knowing pi, unless you have really precise measuring equipment.
