Sentences Cut After Prisoners Memorize Koran

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai has cut the jail terms of 12 inmates by up to five years after they memorized parts of the Koran, prison authorities said on Wednesday.

Head of prisons Mohammed al-Suweidi told reporters
the inmates, some of them facing 25-year terms, took advantage of a drive launched by Dubai to raise religious awareness.

Under the initiative, prisoners who memorize five of the 30 sections of the Muslim holy book get their term cut by one year while those memorizing 10 sections get five years shaved off. Inmates memorizing the whole Koran get 15 years off.

"Since the initiative was only introduced in March, nobody has yet memorized the whole book," Suweidi said.

The 12 prisoners were from the United Arab Emirates and other countries including Pakistan, Syria, Jordan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Authorities did not say what they had been convicted of.

BTW when they mean memroization, They MEAN memorization, IE you have to go Page 1 of the Koran

It's actually pretty impressive. If they indeed suceeded in memorizing the book, then they really have new found talents. It's pretty much a process of regeneration/reintegration in society.

I also don't see myself capable of doing it, jail or no jail.

Of course, the morality of letting them go also depends of their previous crimes.

You ignoring the point, there are over twenty "serious" crimes which mandate swift Death in Iran, if somone is IN Jail and not slated for excution, chances are they did somthing minor

That's actually pretty impressive that they were able to memorize the entire Koran, but I don't see why they should be able to get out of prison early because of that. Malory memorized three different legends that together formed the Arthurian legends. And he did that in a language other than the one he used normally. He didn't get out of prison early, because of it.

What a bunch of fucking idiots. Like most religious fundies, they believe that a show of faith indicates good character, so they think that anyone who memorizes the Koran must be too good to be in prison.

Mind you, this is certainly no more ludicrous than Falwell and Robertson calling for the release of an axe-murderer in Texas because she converted to Christianity and was "a different person now" (wasn't her name Karla Faye Tucker, or something like that?).

I remember that, she was on death row for stabbing someone with an ice pick. She converted and became a "changed woman". The only reason anyone gave a flying fuck about here is for one indisputable reason: she was a woman. Hundreds of men have converted, reaffirmed, etc to whatever religion before their execution date. How many of them do you think were spared? By the way, this bitch eventually got put down like she deserved.
