Could God too be metaphorical?

Post by Gandalf »

Quite often people will state that they believe the Bible is steeped in metaphor, therefore making some of the more outlandish claims more palatable. But the basic theme of the Bible is that God created and loves his people and such. So almost everything in the Bible is considered to be interpreted, except God.

So would it be possible to claim God himself is merely a metaphor as opposed to a protagonist?

Ie: Sometimes he's nature and other times he's just the personification of people's consciences. Persons talking with God could be conducting "self-reflection and the like.

Opinions, comments, flamage?

if you take him as a metaphor, why believe?

it was the dillema I had when I was deconverting. either the bible was inerrant, and god hated us all, or it was a metaphor, in which occam cut god out.

The people that wrote it surely didn't mean to say that.
On the other hand, this shows how "sacred texts" can be used to support any point of view.

No.

There's a clear difference between "it was raining cats and dogs" as a metaphor and the rain being metaphorical too.
