Anti-IMAX creationist stupidity

Post by Firefox »

Here.
IMAX documentaries that touch on the issue of evolution have been removed by numerous science museums and other venues in Southern states following local protests, the New York Times reported on Saturday. The films include, Cosmic Voyage, Galapagos, and Volcanoes of the Deep Sea. In an interview with the newspaper, Carol Murray, marketing director of the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, said that the museum had pulled Volcanoes after receiving complaints from members of the audience. She told the Times, "If it is not going to draw a crowd and it is going to create controversy, from a marketing point of view, I cannot make a recommendation." Such decisions to bar screenings of the film are apt to affect the content of IMAX documentaries in the future, the Times indicated. It quoted Joe DeAmicis, vice president of the California Science Center in Los Angeles as saying, "It is going to be hard for our filmmakers to continue to make unfettered documentaries when they know that 10 per cent of the market will reject them."
They pulled a documentary on volcanoes? What's next, deny the SE Asian tsunami was caused by an earthquake?

So is the museum also going to pull any and all exhibits that reference evolution?

Oh no, this exhibit of the universe says that it's older than 6000 years old. Better pull it.

They've already made inroads at a national park to impose creationist dogma on the public. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the next step.

They could always edit out the evolution parts and replace them with Jerry Springer clips. How about Plate Techtonics Who Can't Stop Dating Their Transvestite Cousins? You know that'd be a hit.

Ironically, such films would appeal to many of the same screaming creationists.

Sadly, such films have said screaming creationists as cast members.

Seriously, are they going to tear down dinosaur exhibits next? Deny the existence of the fossilized remains of plant and animal life predating the supposed birthday of the earth 6k years ago?

It pisses me off that they give in to these fuckers. If I were in charge, I would have laughed at them and showed MORE movies on evolution.

If you don't like science, why the hell would you go to a science museum, and then bitch that it teaches science? What the hell is wrong with these people?

I want to keep laughing about this kind of stupidity, but I have to admit I'm getting more and more torn between disgusted and fearful. To see this kind of willful ignorance continuing in our present society is just unthinkable. With all of our scientific capabilities and knowledge that people have been refining for CENTURIES, it's absolutely inconceivable to me that the religious nutbars can still challenge and WIN legal and socaial battles on issues that should be deemed simple fact.

I'm truly at a loss for words over things like this sometime.

Science? Museums

Post by Nick Lancaster »

Oh, I can't wait for what's next:

- Ban any and all planetarium shows that talk about the Big Bang or the origin of life, or the possibility of life on other worlds.

- Ban the planetarium 'Christmas Star' program, because it suggests non-miraculous origins for the event. We all know GOD just put this amazingly bright light into the sky, y'know. (Not to mention we suggest the Wise Men were likely Persian astrologers ... you know, a pack of godless Iranians.)

- Prohibit aquariums from showing or talking about Coaceleanths or evolution. Fucking drain the tanks and close the doors, it offendeth Bubba.

- NO FOSSILS ALLOWED. (Hey, Bubba - if the Earth is so young, where did all the oil come from, hmmm? You DO realize oil is compressed, liquified organic matter?)

For that matter, let's revise the model of the solar system and put Earth at the center again. Let's chuck all this nonsense about stars and say they're nothing but light leaking through this big-ass dome or sphere that God hung ... well, somewhere.

Idiots.

Lets face it. Britain got rid of their fundies by having them sent to the new world when it was first discovered.

When in doubt, blame the puritains.

The Simpsons episode with the fake angel fossil was kind of prophetic about that type of fundie retardness.

I could only say that you need to blame yourselves. In my experience, it seems that secular humanists, atheists, etc. are not very proactive when dealing with these kinds of circumstances. You wait for the fires to pop up first, THEN go to try to put them out. I think there needs to be a grass roots movement, and "you all" need to start organizing to counteract nonsense such as this. It's not going to go away and who cares if you are "outnumbered" or not? Get your voice in the open (besides just the ACLU and national science board)...get organized for crying out loud. Posting this on a BBS is helping exactly what?

It's helping exactly nothing. And you're right, there should be a grass-roots movement to protest the anti-evolutionist / creationist teachings of some of the southern states. But the simple fact of the matter is that I have better things to do than buy a plane ticket to West Bumblefuck, Arkansas to spend a week yelling at stupid people who can't even spell the word "logic" without a few extra consonants.

Although the concept of throwing 10,000 year-old rocks through fundie windows is amusing at very least. ;)

why don't they open up their own fucking "science" museums? why the hell does everyone else need to change to suit their desires when they're a minority?
