Are in in league with mike_006 or is it just a coincidence? :)

Indoctrination from birth, together with a severe lack of skills at basic Science will do that to you. The only way to escape from a fundie family is through school, and even that is conditioned because of the nice religious private schools fundie parents sometimes choose.

Really, many of them only have the opportunity to face new ideas at college, and some are too dumb to get there, or already too indoctrinated to accept them. Those will be the new fundies, and continue the cycle.

Fear. Raw, naked fear. Fear of the world, fear of what comes after this world, fear of the unknown. They wrap themselves in the blanket of religion and use it as both club and shield to 'protect' them from the scary outside. It gives them a community of like minded followers to low and graze with, appealing to the most basic of herd instincts.

Anyone that does not agree with them threatens to invalidate or question their belief systems; hence they circle the wagons and hurl poop until the Scary Things from the Outside go away.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Exactly. Wait...

*looks at name of poster*

Oh. Of course.

How exactly did you delude yourself into thinking that you have anything resembling the truth?

As I said, indoctrination from birth and lack of skills in Science.

Care to prove it otherwise? humm? Come on, pick a theme. I only ask for it to be whitin a branch of scientific knowledge.

Four things:

Ignorance- Notice how dumb your average fundy is? It's a requirement to turn out like that. Education has always been religion's greatest fear.

Shame and Guilt- they're raised to believe that normal healthy things and even simply being human is a shame. Ever wonder why so many things, and such natural things are sins? Because every one does them. Because no can escape doing those things.

Fear- Now you take people that are dumb as posts and ashamed over everything and you tell them they're going to a place of everlasting torment unless they follow the rules. They're terrified so they do what you tell them. You give them these impossible rules that they don't know are impossible and they're terrified because they can't.

A Slim Hope- you give them a thin veiled hope that maybe, just maybe they'll get in to heaven. If they do everything you tell them, believe everything you tell them. And of course you can't question that system or you'll go to Hell.

Indoctrination from birth? Sure. Especially since I just became a Christian about 1-2 years ago.

How did I convince myself?By the witness of the Holy Spirit, which proves itself to be true.

Then you simply suffer from lack of a proper education and knowledge.

Alright. Is there any tiny bit of science you find to be untrue? Evolution, perchance? something akin to it? Humm?

And you never heard a word about the Bible or this religion called "Christianity" until then? Suuuure.

Gotta love those misdirected "rebuttals".

Rarely do you see such an overt declaration of circular reasoning.

Truth? What truth? Do you have proof that it is true? Or are you going to just say that "Welll... it sez so in th' Buy-Buhlll..." How about outside confirmation?
Indoctrination from birth? Sure. Especially since I just became a Christian about 1-2 years ago.
And how/why/what changed? Were you already a 'nominal Christian' that suddenly got involved? Face it, in the States we live in a Christian-oriented society, so you've been exposed to this for a long time.

Oblique references are not an agument make. Details.
Please.

I knew I was going to get a comment on that.

I have a running joke with some friends about abuse (red headed step-child being a cliche victim). And no, that does not excuse it.

Plus, I hope you weren't offended at my dastardliness.

Guy fundies: just can't get any pussy, so they must make up a reason why everyone else should not get pussy.

Girl fundies: to nervous to get fucked, so they like the reasons that guys make up explaining why they should not be fucked.
The most basic assumption about the world is that it does not contradict itself.

Gricksigger, I can personally attest to the fact that I'm God, and I can assure you I didn't visit you. You have been mislead by Satan and he is trying to trick you. Come to me, my son, and you shall be saved.

A good deal of the Fundies honestly beleive that is the truth, and are trying their hardest to save everyone else from Hell because that's what they've been taught. The thought is nice, though they are seriously misguided.

They think they are being nice.

One of my pet peeves: honesty is used as an identifier of "meanness".

Off topic, I know. But the thinking they are nice point, rose up a recent encounter of the moron kind.

My hunch is that fundamentalists are motivated by the same thing that motivates atheists to attack them. They believe (regardless of the validity of their belief) that they know the truth. They want others to gain this knowledge. If this means being aggressive, being rude, or coming off as an idiot, so be it. It happens to be the case that most fundamentalists are all of these things, but I know some that are none of them; they are much more pleasant to be around.

Note that their motivations are independent from the validity of their beliefs.
