Interesting how he cites the well-known quote about pi=3 in the Bible but not the part where it describes this "brim" as an integral part of that measurement, isn't it? Could it be that there is no such part, and he's grasping at straws? Naaawww ...Cyril wrote:http://www.for-god.net/pi.htm
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment!

Hm? The NRSV used for theological analysis here say the following:AdmiralKanos wrote:Interesting how he cites the well-known quote about pi=3 in the Bible but not the part where it describes this "brim" as an integral part of that measurement, isn't it? I can see where you're coming from, but the "from brim to brim" reference is ambiguous IMHO, since it's impossible to tell if it means the outer edge or inner edge of the brim. Given that the brim is "like the flower of a lily," it is not a simple ring, but is a flared lip. If measured across at the most convenient point (the top of the flare), it would be larger than at a lower point, where it would be easier to get a string across. Then again, there's no proof (other than in fundie minds) that this is a direct measurement, and it may have been eyeball/back of envelope math, so it doesn't bother me if the numbers are wrong, I'd just like to figure out why they're wrong. Then he made the molten sea; it was round, ten cubits from brim to brim, and five cubits high. A line of thirty cubits would encircle it completely. Under its brim were panels all around it, each of ten cubits, surrounding the sea; there were two rows of panels, cast when it was cast. It stood on twelve oxen, three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east; the sea was set on them. The hindquarters of each were toward the inside. Its thickness was a handbreadth; its brim was made like the brim of a cup, like the flower of a lily; it held two thousand baths
Given that it held 2 thousand baths (roughly 12000 gallons), and that a cubit was roughly 17 and a half inches, could a cylinder 524.7 inches across and 87.45 inches high hold that much liquid?

Wasn't there a Sci-Fi book based on that premise? Something about twin planets so close they shared an atmosphere.AdmiralKanos wrote:Interesting how he cites the well-known quote about pi=3 in the Bible but not the part where it describes this "brim" as an integral part of that measurement, isn't it? It's not my place in life to make people happy. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to watch me slaughter cows you hold sacred. Don't talk to me unless you're prepared to have your basic assumptions challenged. If you want bunnies in light, talk to someone else.
