Swedish Health Care

I've got a sociology assignment on health care, specifically Sweden's. I've researched it and such, but sometimes that doesn't tell the whole story, so if any Swedes here have any particular insights or impressions one wouldn't get without actually living with it, I would greatly appreciate your input. How good it really is, etc. Thanks in advance.

Let me dismiss the popular claim that Sweden has a third world healthcare, there is a reason that Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel prize in medicine.

I had knee surgery about ten years ago, and I was on sick leave for six months before I got a time to fix the knee so the waiting time can be long.

I had a major problem in the right knee, all ligaments where destroyed and the “Korsband” I do not know it’s name in English was broken.

After surgery I had another six months of rehabilitation before I could get back to work.

All surgery and rehab cost me around 2000skr or $250. I do not think that the US medicare can beat that. And my recovery is 100% I have no problem with that knee now and the only proof of surgery is a big scar all over the kneecap.

People think that? Never would have occured to me. I would just simply assume that Sweden has care comparable to any Western European nation, the US, Canada, Australia, or Japan.

What does the medi-care encompass? everything or do you need to pay more for a full package US style?

It basically covers everything, you don't pay for surgeries etc. If you're admitted to a hospital, you pay 80 SEK (around $10) /day. If your medical expenses exceeds 900 SEK ($115), is entitled to free medical health care for the rest of the twelve months. Health care is generally free of charge for those under the age of 20 (IIRC, in some counties it's 18).

There are disadvantages in the form of a.o. long queues.

Not quite, 30-35% for the lower incomes although as your income increases so does the taxrate on that part of your eranings. Also there is a sales tax on everything of about 25% IIRC so you are taxed to about 50-60% minimum.

Not quite, only half the transaction is illegal. Buying sex is illegal but selling sex isn't IIRC.

Well finding a escort or a callgirl is easy but expensive. Supply and demand you know, but all "Sting" operations are illegal so they need to catch you in the act and admit.

I do not think that there is more than around 10-20 people ever cagut buy that law.
