Overpressure wave in a cutscene?

Post by Edward Yee »

Mods, please move wherever appropriate.

Was watching this game intro movie (streaming), and at 00:01:43, I see what I think is an overpressure wave coming from a pile of burning wood pillars/beams, and the character starts to turn his body towards it, only for the burning wreckage to "explode" (hard to describe - comes towards him?), then the camera cuts to the outside and very visibly shows an expanding circular effect, and the boundary has gone past the video before the expanding "fireball" of the actual explosion, then cut to the fireyness chewing up roof tiles, and then...

... what the, is this guy forming multiple overpressure waves from his hand?! (I'm trying to figure out the physics of the effect I'm seeing. )

Well, it is probably closer to some weird oriental telekinetic voodoo - one that kicks Newton is the arse too.
What is Project Zohar?

Here's to a certain mostly harmless nutcase.

Didja take a look?

Sadly, with this character, your explanation is possibly the in-game explanation, but I'm trying to figure out if what I saw was him forming an overpressure wave (that left the ground around him intact)...

Well, if it's TK, then it isn't coming from his hand, but from his head.

Given the content of the video, I think you're going about this the wrong way by applying rational thought to the concept. May as well think up a biological law for The Force.

Of course I did, I couldn't have called it 'oriental' otherwise. And no, I don't think it is overpressure.

The first pressure wave is probably a visual representation, for the benefit of the viewer, of a sort of ripple through whatever magical force they are using to power their uber abilities. Essentially when someone uses their powers a signal may occur that causes others to sense it, that is what the first shockwave we saw is, a visual representation of this signal, this also explains why the guy reacted to it, because it told him that his foe wasn't down yet. The second explosion is just the magic powers actually being used.

Didn't stop somebody from giving the whole "versus debate" treatment to Inuyasha... Sesshoumaru's was only slightly better in lacking mass...

But thanks for that explanation. Can I put that line in my sig?

Unfortunately, Molyneux, nowhere that I know of.

Ah, okay. Thanks, Ford Prefect.

Interesting... I never thought of it as a mere visual effect... hell, I never thought of fantasy that way. :P Thanks, Adrian Laguna!

Then again, I have a rather anti-fantasy bent due to insecurity and control freak tendencies...
