Star Map

Post by Balrog »

I was wondering if there are any good sites out there that show all the stars around ours? Something like 30 lightyears out and closer? It's for a story I'm writing.
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

Try Celestia. It's a free program that allows you to view the galaxy in 3D, you can pick out the stars from there.

When I get home, I've got links to maps out to 12.5 and 25 ly, and maybe 50. Rendered in 3D.

You could start here

Here's an extremely convenient one that i've used. However it only covers a volume 35 light years across.
Robert Gilruth to Max Faget on the Apollo program: “Max, we’re going to go back there one day, and when we do, they’re going to find out how tough it is.”

Wow, those maps are amazing!

Wow.. .Celestia rocks. I'd love to say that I intended to use it seriously, but the Enterprise now orbits Earth and Discovery makes plaintive cries of 'Daisy Daisy' from Jupiter.

It's a damned fine program
According to wikipedia, "the Mohorovičić discontinuity is the boundary between the Earth's crust and the mantle."
According to Starbound, it's a problem solvable with enough combat drugs to turn you into the Incredible Hulk.
