They're relying on their 3rd largest in the world military and proximity to the border- although it ain't much of an advantage, their military is incredibly obsolete. In fact, North Korea just hiked up military spending again. All while the population starves.

Why isn't even Pyong Yang(sp?) lit up?

Though if you look at the pic, SK's largest collection of lights is very close to the border. That's Seoul, and within NK's artillery range.

Ive seen this before. I always find it interesting. Stuff like this makes me happy I live in California and not some place like NK.

Check out korea on this picture.. same thing and you can think about the center of russhia, africa, china and a bunch of other counties.

We have our hands tied, since they most certainly have at least a few nukes and have shown the capability of delivering them to Seul (10 million+ inhabitants). They also are lunatic enough to use them and don't bother about retaliation, as their government? leaves millions of their own starving.

I'm getting more hardliner because of this whole situation. Somebody should have intervened there before they had nukes. Now's to late. That's a mistake that must be avoided in Iraq.

This is a cool pic. If you look closely you can see a trace of lights across all of the former USSR. Its probably a road or railway connecting villages along the way.

Also, I look at my home state I can can make out the Central Valley where its all farmland.

That's one of the most remarkable views I ever saw...
BTW, the line along Russia is the string of towns along the Transsiberian Railroad.

About the second pic:

Two things caught my eye.

1. United States Eastern seaboard. That's a lot of lights.

2. India. Didn't think it'd have that many lights.

Actually, the San Joaquin (Central) Valley shows up fairly well-lit in the image. I think you must be looking at the land between the seaboard and the San Joaquin Valley; that is unlit. It can be seen a bit better here:

You can clearly see an elongated dark area below the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area, surrounded to the west by Highway 101 and San Luis Obispo. Its southern extremity is formed by the luminescent Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County area. Its eastern border is indeed the Central Valley of which you speak, and it is lit (though it is not relatively bright). The lights are from the cities of Fresno (~923,000 pop.), Bakersfield (~662,000 pop.), and the many farming communites in between highways 5 and 99.
This large dark spot is caused by the Diablo and Temblor Ranges, and the Kettleman and Cholame Hills, none of which are heavily populated. The southern portion of the dark area, which is a sort of east-west ellipse, is amusingly almost precisely in the shape of the Los Padres Nat'l Forest.
Indeed, it's very strange to drive through this dark spot even during the day; you go from well-populated surroundings to a completely humanless environment and then back out again, all within 30-40 miles. Incidentally, I recommend anybody making a trans-Californian trip to consider some of the roads that cross the area. While some of them are rather normal (esp. 41), they're nice and scenic, if not efficient for long-distance trips. I particularly recommend 198 between San Lucas and Coalinga; it's very remote and quite beautiful.

But anyways, the Central Valley does show up as lit. So take that, North Korea!
Driving through farmland at night, you realize that though it is a shitty place to live, it's fairly well-lit.

It's a pretty sure bet that they do. The country is suffering from chronic electricity shortages however. And shortages of everything else too. The only people not suffering from starvation in NK are the political elite and the goddamned massive military.

This is very sad...

I'm hungarian and one of our riporter visited a hospital in North Korea couple of months ago.

We -hungarians- established this hospital there back in the 60's.

They still using the same equipments and medical machineries there.

They don't have nearly any kind of medicines.

They don't have anything that is sterilized.

I saw a surgery room with a simpl desk in it (no joke) and the lighting was provided by a simple light bulb hanging on a wire.

This was a hospital for children. Our team has left all their food there but they knew it was nearly nothing.

These shots were taken from a bag, because they didn't allowed to film anything and there was always a two man escort from the local security.

I'd kill these bastards...

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that North Korea is not as densely populated as South Korea??

However, this doesn't explain why North Korea is entirely dark.... perhaps except for electricity breakdowns...
