But that's not much of an indictment of the stragglers' inability to adapt, any more than the Donner Party is evidence of American pioneers being unable to adapt to their surroundings. Under such terrible conditions it's a wonder they lasted as long as they did.

I was not saying it is an indictment of them. I was merely pointing out how the settlement could be wiped out and appear to have not adapted to their surroundings. The few left behind litterally had no ability.
