But that's not much of an indictment of the stragglers' inability to adapt, any more than the Donner Party is evidence of American pioneers being unable to adapt to their surroundings. Under such terrible conditions it's a wonder they lasted as long as they did.

I was not saying it is an indictment of them. I was merely pointing out how the settlement could be wiped out and appear to have not adapted to their surroundings. The few left behind litterally had no ability. Hard to adapt when the locals are unfriendly, you have no tools to work with, and most of the strong backs literally took the last ship out.
