I am curious when the slaves began converting to Christianity?

There was the First Great Awakening of the 18th Century (1730-1770) in the American colonies at the time, which is probably one of the major driving forces in converting the slaves to Christianity from their original beliefs.

So it was an active conversion not a passive conversion?

There was a mix of exposing the slaves to religious services by preachers and such, as well as active attempts to convert the slaves, but regarding the degree of either approach predominating I'm not sure about.
