I have forgotten why, but why are there mass graves? The Islamists went round killing?

They sure did, and also a lot of people died from the indiscriminate shelling that both armies used routinely. Remember, in 1994 Chechnya was not some sort of shithole, it was a small second world enclave with a functioning Soviet military, sort of like Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbajan, etc. In many ways the Chechen war was fought on the same technical level as other post-Soviet wars (Yugoslavia, Karabach, Tajikistan).

Those were pretty high-tech and yet pretty brutal wars (over 500,000 died in them overall, IIRC). And most of them were, in some ways, connected to ethnic strifes or religion, which led to ethnic cleansing, mass murder and all the other neat shit.
