[Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
In the past we've banned several people for plagiarism and made it clear that the board believes it to be serious offense. It is implicitly, but not explicitly, covered by PR 3. I propose recommending to the Administration that PR 3 be amended to explicitly mention plagiarism as a rule violation.

I am in favor of it.

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

I like the idea though I would recommend putting together the actual language of what such a prospective PR would look like.

my brain doesn't work too well for writing up rules like that, but I am i support of a plagerism rule being specifically stated....

Re: [Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
I am in favor of it. Let's see if this meets with everyone's approval:
No Plagiarism: We take just as dim a view on intellectual dishonesty as we do on personal dishonesty. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to claim another person's work as your own. If you are referencing materials in a debate, make sure you cite the materials in question. This is not debate-specific; this also applies to music, art, and any written work. Do not attempt to claim another person's work as your own. You will get caught, and we will deal with you harshly.

Re: [Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
Maybe add something like:
"Do not try to steal anything written here either, for our members are quite adept at finding such copies and reporting you to legal authorities."

Perhaps a less wordy version? Mike is already looking at simplifying the wording of the rules.

"The captain claimed our people violated a 4,000 year old treaty forbidding us to develop hyperspace technology. Extermination of our planet was the consequence. The subject did not survive interrogation."

Re: [Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
there should be a "to" inserted before "any written work".
And I think we should remove the written part. What about graphs and artwork and photos?

Looking good. It gets the point across nicely and covers all possible intellectual property.

GrandMasterTerwynn's most recent version is admirably clear, concise and comprehensive.

QFT. It is a very worthy addition to the board rules and covers all points succinctly.Publius wrote:GrandMasterTerwynn's most recent version is admirably clear, concise and comprehensive.

Re: [Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
Should some then make a motion that it be added to the rules?
I'll do that.
I'll do that.

Re: [Discussion] Adding A Specific Warning Against Plagiarism
Even though the motion has already been seconded, I too support it fully. GrandMasterTerwynn's most recent version of the plagiarism rule update suggestion is entirely suitable for the board's purposes and conveys a clear message.
Confiteor Deo omnipotenti; beatae Mariae semper Virgini; beato Michaeli Archangelo; sanctis Apostolis, omnibus sanctis... Tibit Pater, quia peccavi nimis, cogitatione, verbo et opere, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa! Kyrie Eleison!

I also agree with the final wording of the rule and suggest that it be put to a vote in its present form. I would also urge that it be placed prominently in the rules of the community (ie near the top) since it is of fundamental importance.
