Usergroup: Professionals

A group of professionals including job seekers, contractors, potential employers, industry experts or whoever fits along those lines. Membership will be limited to members that can be trusted with personal information should anyone wish to submit a CV or resume.

It will serve as a basis for industry professionals (any field) to discuss job tips, employment leads, store information on obtaining appropriate visas for different countries and as a place to communicate with each other and if possible network with other professionals.

Members of 'Professionals' may also offer advice to non members in other parts of the board based on what they learn within the group.

The main problem I see with this is how far apart most of our user-base is. While it would be nice to know of jobs available, if it's in Toronto, and I'm in West-by-god... I dont care how qualified I am for the position, that's a little far to go.

No use for a dedicated user group. If somebody has a need to ask for some job interview tips or if there's something available in a specific location, let them post a thread about it in Off Topic and see what response they get. OR if some people want to talk shop, let there be a thread for that.

You'd also have a hell of a time cobbling together the membership and defining what criteria you're going to choose for making those decisions.

If we're going to have something like this, why not make it a forum like ARSE?

I agree. It seems like defining what qualifies as a professional is pretty broad and we've got alot of people that qualify anyway. It seems to make more sense to make a Professional and Career Life sub-forum, since concerns about work and such effects everyone really.

If we're worried about personal information being leaked we could have a policy that resumes should have certain information redacted.

Will such a forum really generate enough traffic to justify its existence? I did a quick search in Off-Topic, plugging in the word "professional" and counted the number of hits which looked relevant. Only 17% of the topics looked like they would've made a good fit for such a forum, and this number is grossly exaggerated, since I went by thread title alone. I'm going to agree with Edi on this one; such topics are well-suited to the present Off-Topic forum as it is right now.

Well, you shouldn't post personal information that you don't want out in the world on a public forum in any event. However, we could make the forum like ARSE and the HoS and make it board member only.

ARSE isn't known for its traffic either. I'm just saying that if we do it at all, we should do it as a sub-forum, rather than a usergroup.

My opinion would be that if you read comments from someone you want to network with, you can PM that person, and they can choose whether or not to give you advice or a leg up.
Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

Though an interesting idea, I'd think I'd have to concur with the consensus here. "Professional" is too vague a category to form a dedicated usergroup and I suspect the traffic would not bear up sufficiently to justify the bandwidth.

It sounds like something that can be handled through Off-Topic and leads to a PM if serious.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
