The setting: a small, war-torn French village, 1945.
2nd Lieutenant Audie Murphy is leading a squad of ten G.I.s through the French countryside, trying to regroup with division HQ after his company was torn apart in heavy combat (his .50 cal ran out of ammo at Holtzwihr, and he was forced to retreat...the advancing German armor and infantry surrounded his company and destroyed it, though Audie was able to escape with a handful of men). Murphy decides to take take his men through a small abandoned village.
Corporal Alvin York was in battle in Chatel-Chehery, France in 1918 when a bizarre electrical storm transports him and 20 doughboys forward in time to 1945. York takes command of the confused privates and has them set up defenses in a nearby small abandoned village.
When the two forces meet, York believes that Murphy and his men are sent by the devil to kill him and his men, and Murphy believes that York's men are German auxiliary units. They will fight to the death, and no German or Allied forces are close enough to intervene.
Murphy is armed with a Thompson submachine gun, and his men have seven Garands and three M1A1 Carbines. They each have a Colt 1911 pistol and they have five pineapple grenades between them.
York and all his men are armed with Springfield rifles, except one who has a BAR. Each man also carries a Colt pistol, and the doughboys have five grenades between them.
Who is the victor?

Oh yeah, let me spell out the obvious: York has the advantage in position and numbers, but Murphy's men have better weapons and better tactics.
Do you guys think the number of men on each side should change to make it a fairer fight, or is this about right?

They both take casualities before one side run clean out of ammo and disengrages.
But it depends on the layout of the village really. If it is large enough so that 20 men is not capable of covering all angles of approach or create effective interlocking fields of fire, the attacker can simply take an flank and use the automatic firepower of tommie and grands on overwatch to pin and seal off movement while moving. Since the goal is to regroup heavy combat probably will not occur and should not occur.
